Bullying and Children What your son is describing is bullying, plain and simple. Although it is late in the school year, you should take action by reassuring your son that he did nothing to bring this on and that you will help him. Many parents, unfortunately, think that bullying and being bullied are rites of passage, something all kids endure at some point in their lives just like suffering through boring assemblies and bad cafeteria food. But bullying is not, and should not be, considered a normal part of growing up. Studies done in Norway show that bullying is most common in the younger age groups but is still present even in the mid-teens. The percent of children who are bullied ranges from 17% in the second grade to about 5% in the ninth grade. A recent survey in the United States shows that 10% of children reported being bullied, 13% reported being a bully, and 6% reported
being both bullied and being the bully. This survey was limited to sixth through tenth graders. What is bullying? Bullying involves intentional and repeated actions and words designed to intimidate or hurt another person. There is usually an imbalance of power, either physical or psychological, between the perpetrator and his or her victim. Occasional name calling and shoving are not considered bullying because they are usually not repetitive events. On the other hand, if a child is on the receiving end of taunts and name calling by any persons regularly, then that is considered bullying. Physical aggression, social alienation, verbal aggression, and intimidation are the four main categories of bullying. Many parents are shocked when they find out their child has been the victim of a bully, and a few parents are shocked to find out that their child has been a bully. Victims tend to be more passive, anxious, and insecure than non-victims and to have more negative views of themselves. A small percentage of victims are termed provocative because they are both anxious and aggressive, often seeking the attention of the perpetrator. The bullies, by comparison, tend to be aggressive children and frequently lack sympathy for others. Bullies usually have a positive self-image and a desire to be in control. Tile bully cherishes power. The cherished myth of the bully as a loner with a poor self-image seeking to bolster his own self worth by attacking others didn’t hold up to scrutiny of scientific study. of course, there will always be victims and perpetrators who do not fit these profiles] Any child can be a bully, and any child can be bullied if the circumstances are right. Although bullying is common, studies report that only half the children report what is happening to a parent, and even fewer to a teacher. Few adults witness the acts of the bully because most aggression occurs at school and places where there is little oversight by an adult. The playground, cafeteria, and rest rooms are common locations for the perpetrator to act. Children who are victims may develop a variety of vague health complaints to avoid going to school or wherever the bullying is taking place. Sometimes this kind of school avoidance behavior can be a red flag for parents, so ask your child if he or she is being picked on and bullied. What to do about bullying If your child reveals to you that he or she is being bullied, take action. Parents can help the child by teaching him how to demonstrate an air of’ sell-confidence by making good eye contact, speaking clearly and loudly enough to be heard. Remind the child to walk away from the encounter, tell the bully firmly that he is in the wrong, and to tell a teacher, parent or other adult what is happening. Parents of bullies should also intervene to stop the behavior and make it clear that bullying will not be tolerated or ignored One study showed that 60% of boys who were identified as bullies in grades six through nine had at least one criminal conviction by age 24 years, between 35% and 40% of these children had three or more criminal convictions by that same age. Psychological counseling is often helpful and may identify the underlying problems such as depression or conduct disorder. There are many resources for parents and teachers. There are a number of good books such as Tackling Bullying in Your School: A Practical Handbook for Teachers by Sharp and Smith as well as Bully Proofing Your School by Garrity, Jens and Porter.

The blue pages contain numbers of city services, government agencies, and public schools. Businesses and professional services are listed in a special section--the Yellow Pages. To make a long distance call, you need an area code. Each area in the U.S. has an area code. The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example, New York has one area code, but so does the whole state of Oregon. If you want to know the area code of a place, you can look it up in the area code map which is printed in the front of the white pages. There are a lot of public telephones in the U. S. They have their own numbers. If you are making a long distance call on a public telephone and run out of money, give the number on your phone to the person you’re talking to. Then hang up the receiver and he or she can call you back. If you make a long distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what has happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money.

Scientists have observed that plants themselves produce many poisonous chemicals for defense against insects. But insects have developed ways of dealing with them and,in fact, have been eating plants for about 250 million years. Now insects are using these same mechanisms to deal with man-made poisons-insecticide.This is why resistance of insects to insecticide has developed so rapidly. What should be done?Scientists studyilg the problem suggest that farmers use less insecticide. At the moment, famlers regularly spray crops as a precaution against problems that are caused by large numbers of pests. They should, instead, spray only where pests have actually been seen.Secondly, farmers could use a combination of two or three jnsecticide at once.To survive, the insects would need to become resistant to two or more poisons at the same time. The most surprising suggestion, perhaps, perhaps,is that,at certain times of the year, famers should actually try to attract new insects onto the crops they are trying to protect. The new insects will mate with those which survived from a certain kind of insecticide and will lessen the latter’s resistance to it. Scientists hope that these and other measures will postpone the day when farmers and scientists will have to stand by while new super bugs which may be resistant to all our poisons invade our farms and devour our crops.

After years of failing to take the disease seriously, Beijing has become a late convert to the cause of HIV/Aids education, prevention and treatment. In recent months health authorities have stepped up plans to distribute free condoms, promote needle exchanges, provide free antiretroviral drugs to patients and boost Aids awareness through education campaigns. Yet, Beijing had better be ready for an epic battle if it is to prevent a full-scale crisis. Already, more than 200,000 people have died of Aids in China and a further 840,000 axe living with HIV/Aids. The UN warns that, unchecked, the disease could claim 10 million victims by 2010. The world’s first HIV case was discovered in America in 1981. Four years later, China discovered its first HIV case. However, long after that, ignorance about how the disease is transmitted remains widespread. Disseminating knowledge of how HIV is transmitted and finding ways to cheaply distribute antiretroviral drugs for infected patients are among tasks facing health authorities, who are now applied to preventing an oncoming disaster. Although China is coming late to the Aids war, it can benefit from the experience of other countries and it can also benefit from the increased global funding and willingness to share expertise that is available today. Therefore, we have a good reason to believe that China will eventually succeed in its effort to restrain the spread of Aids.

There is little doubt that life-styles are changing and that these changes will have an influence on the way business operates in the years ahead. Several factors are causing life-style changes in U.S. society. First, there is more leisure time than ever before. The workweek is now less than forty hours, as compared to seventy hours a century ago. Some experts believe it will be twenty-five hours or less before the year 2000. Several firms have adopted four-day workweeks with more hours per day. Others have cut the number of hours worked each week. Reduced work schedules mean increased leisure time. Second, families have fewer children than before—and young couples are postponing childbirth instead of having their children early in the marriage. This trend has forced many, businessmen to modify their competitive strategies. Gerber Products Company used to advertise “babies are our business—our only business”. started[B] additional [G] activities [L] repeatedly[C] duration [H] functions [M] less[D] effective [I] participated [N] amount[E] more [J] efficient [O] obviously
48. 【S1】
[K]started(开始)符合语义,故为答案。
The key to weight loss(减肥的关键),activity提示此处应填形容词。
[B]additional(额外的)用在此处不符合句意;[D]effective(有效的)与effects词义发生重复;[J]efficient(效率高的)不能修饰effects。
很明显,[G]activities(活动)与后面的举例不符,故答案为[H]functions(功能)。
下段中的if your aerobic activity is low to moderately intense and of long duration提示此处应填[C]duration(持续时间)。
weight loss(减肥)只能说是“有效的”,故答案为[D]effective(有效的)。而[J]efficient(高效的)在此不符合语义。
Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
With many European economies showing slow growth, the retail sector is coming under increasing pressure to improve its service and do more to meet consumers’ demands. Is the customer always right? The answer, it seems, depends on which country you are in. Shopping is very much a part of a country’s culture, and attitudes to shopping and consumers vary from country to country just as much as climate or taste in food. From the air-conditioned order of American malls to the disorder of African markets, the way we shop shows the way we see ourselves and our relationships with other people. Recent economic hardship has given the consumer increased power in Europe as retailers fight to win their share of reduced disposable income. This has meant falling prices, plenty of special offers and a re examination of what customer service really means. People often paint to America as an example of sophisticated customer service. In restaurants in the south of the U. S. A., for example, waiters compliment you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on the wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction. Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in a restaurant might well dream of such attention, but do Europeans really want US style service? As a friend of mine once told me, “By the end of the evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife.” It is a question of expectations. Different nationalities expect different types of service.
Attitudes to service are, of course, affected by employers’ attitudes to their workers. As American sales and service personnel are heavily dependent on commission and tips, they have more motive to provide more service. But is this fair? Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings, Sundays and 12 hour shifts? Does it fit in with our picture of society? It might not be a case of “Is the customer always right?” but a case of “How much service is it fair to expect?”
58. What can you infer from the first paragraph? A.European economy is going downhill.
B.Service in retailing has been influenced by the economic trend. C.Retailing has totally changed its tradition of service.
D.Consumer demands are being included in retailing service.
59. What can the way of consuming show?
A.How people of one country view human relations. B.How different cultures are formed.
C.Whether the customer is always right or not.
D.How people of one country view people of another country.
解析:文章第二段说到“the way we shop shows the way we see ourselves and our relationships with other people.”
60. What is the waiter unlikely to do ff you have dinner in a restaurant of southern America?
A.Complimenting you on your dressing. B.Praising your wise choice of the food. C.Giving their regards to you.
D.Examining the quality of the food for you.
61. What does the remark of the writer’s friend imply? A.Waiters are usually skillful at talking with others. B.We should spend more time talking with our families.
C.The good service of one culture may not suit people of another culture. D.People regard waiter’s talk as one part of service.
62. What does the author say about the extra service given by the American workers?
A.It is a vivid reflection of American society. B.It is neither fair nor legal.
C.It is a thing that the employers axe unwilling to see.
D.It is a way in which the serving people can earn more money.
They give Action Man a certain ruggedness and bestow instant testosterone (肾上腺激素) on movie heroes, and according to British psychologists, facial scars can also make men more attractive to the opposite sex. Men with mild facial scars were typically ranked as more appealing by women who were looking for a brief relationship, though they were not considered better as marriage material, a study found. In the same experiments, women with facial scars were judged to be as attractive as those without, the researchers said. The sexual allure of the facial scar has long puzzled psychologists. Many believe they are seen by women as a sign of masculinity and an exciting, risk-taking personality, though in Shakespeare’s Ali’s Well that Ends Well, an old lord, Lafeu, takes a different view, commenting: “A scar nobly got, or a noble scar, is a good livery(特殊的外貌) of honor.” Psychologists
at the universities of Liverpool and Stirling decided to investigate the effects of facial scars by asking ll5 women and men to rate the attractiveness of eight strangers of the opposite sex. Half were asked to look at original face shots, while the other half viewed images that had been digitally manipulated to add scars to their cheeks, jawbones(颌骨.) or foreheads. While the scars made no difference to the perceived attractiveness of women, scarred men ranked 5.7 percentage points higher in the appeal ratings than those with undamaged skin. “A large scar is unlikely to make you more attractive, but there are some scars that women do seem to find appealing. There’s the whole James Bond thing, where a person is attractive but probably not the best marriage material,” said Robert Burriss, a psychologist at Liverpool who led the study. For each picture, volunteers were asked to guess whether the scar was from a fight, an accident or illness. The men’s scars were often blamed on a violent encounter, while those on women were often attributed to accidents. “When scarring is seen as the result of a violent encounter, it signifies strength or bravery in a guy, or it could be due to an accident, and so evidence of a risk-taking personality. Either way, it’s another way of assessing a man’s masculinity,’ Burriss said. Men without scars could be seen as more caring and cautious, and so more suitable for a long term relationship, he added.
