Career is the source of one’s income as well as a way to realize his or her personal value. Some people focus on one thing for their entire life while others try different new jobs all the time. This phenomenon triggers a heated discussion about whether young people should try various jobs before they determine their lifelong careers. Personally speaking, experiencing different jobs can help one decide about his or her lifelong career. Here are some reasons to support my view as follows.
Firstly, in trying different jobs, young people can find something really appealing to them. In other words, trying different jobs let them find the one which is most suitable for their personality and ambition. By contrast, if they get a job after they graduate without thinking about changing it, they may miss the chance to encounter a better job opportunity. Taking my brother as an example, after he stepped into society, he job-hopped frequently. When I asked him why he changed so many jobs, he responded that all those jobs were not what he really wanted. Finally, he has found a satisfying job which he enjoys very much.
Furthermore, changing jobs will increase people’s social connections. At present, friends are a kind of significant resource for people living in this modern society, because in many cases, people always need to seek help from their friends. A friend of mine, Tom, is a good case in point. He was once a teacher, a government employee, and right now he is engaged in international trading. Vast working experiences enable him to know people in different fields. Recently, my cousin is carving out a business, but lacks initial funds. When I resorted to Tom, he quickly helped my cousin get the loan with a couple of phone calls.
Admittedly, changing jobs also has some bad influences, which may indicate you are not very stable or reliable. By contrast, those who only do one job tend to be considered dependable, and employers tend to favor and speak highly of them, because of their loyalty and concentration. However, if one doesn’t find a job that he or she wants most, he or she will feel unsatisfied and regretful deep inside. Although changing jobs may have some downsides, this conduct can lead people to find jobs they really love. Only in this way will they acquire a perfect life without regrets.
To sum up, it is worthwhile that young people experience different jobs before making a decision on their lifelong careers. It is not only because they can find their true callings, but also they can get a large interpersonal network.

Traditionally speaking, adults should play a dominant role in society. Based on this consensus, the majority of people do not believe that teenagers can exert any influence on the important decisions that determine the future of society as a whole. But the way I see it, teenagers are undoubtedly affecting the decision-making for the whole society in their own ways. My viewpoint can be well illustrated through the following reasons and examples.
The government’s support of online business is the first testimony. The recent years have seen a boom in online business in China, which can be attributed to a large extent to the change of teenagers’ shopping habits. Compared with their elders, teenagers are more ready to purchase online and wait the goods to be delivered to their homes. Taking Taobao, the biggest online market in China, for example, more than half of its revenue is created by
teenagers. Some of them shop like crazy online, while others start up their own online shops.
The second evidence comes from some regulations made by the government under the influence of social campaigns conducted by the youth organization. With the deepening of reform and opening-up policy, teenagers in China are becoming increasingly concerned with the fate of their country. Some youth organizations initiate valuable social activities aiming to provoke the public awareness of social well-being. Some of important activities gain momentum big enough to affect the policy-makers. In my community, a couple of local high school students started a campaign called “no cigarette butts”, which quickly caught the attention of the government. As a response, a regulation was soon passed against the behavior of littering cigarette butts.
On the other hand, subject to the tender age, teenagers’ opinions tend to be imprudent or radical, which are hardly taken into consideration by decision-makers. However, the statement that they have no influence on the decisions with regard to the future of society is unilateral and arbitrary. Many evidences today have shown that the teenagers are indeed influencing important decisions in their own way.
In conclusion, teenagers play an increasingly important role in the development of society. Chairman Mao once said, “the world belongs to both adults and the young, but it will eventually belong to the young.” This famous remark mirrors the significance of teenagers, because they themselves are the future of society.

Education has been a never-fading topic in society. With remarkable social progress, people has attached great importance to preschool education. Recently, a heated debate has arisen about whether government should make it possible to cancel the cost of preschool for all children in the country. In my opinion, this suggestion is really worth considering, and I am going to list my reasons in the following paragraphs.
In the first place, canceling the cost of preschool can make early education accessible to a greater number of people. As we know, there is currently a serious financial disparity in society, which means a quite big number of social members are struggling at the bottom. They have difficulty feeding their families, let alone giving their young kids decent education. If left uneducated, these poor kids will lose an opportunity to become useful talents who can make contributions to society. If government make preschool education free of charge for those financially-challenged families, their kids will receive good education at an early stage, and then stand a fair chance to change their fate.
Secondly, canceling the cost of preschool education could be a good way to boost economy and create job opportunities. If the cost is canceled, a heavy demand for preschool education will be created. As a result, a large number of preschools are expected to be built, and a great many teachers will be needed to offer service to preschool kids. This way can serve as an impetus to the current sluggish economy. Plus, a great number of people will find new jobs in newly-built schools, which may help relieve the high unemployment rate in the present day.
Admittedly, I am not denying the disadvantages of making preschool education free of charge. For instance, the government will face a heavy financial burden and may levy higher
tax on other fields. However, the issue of education concerns almost all families in society, and it should be given the top priority, because kids are the future of the country. If the government manages to inform the public of the intention of this conduct, there will be nothing to worry about.
In conclusion, I think it is wise for the government to make preschool at no cost for children’s families. It is not only because this policy will let every kid in society enjoy the opportunity to receive education equally, but also it is conducive to restoring the economy and decreasing unemployment rate.

It is never easy to lead, no matter for a leader in a company or of a country. They have to possess various abilities and skills to do the job well. Some people claim that communicative skills are the most important quality that is required for a successful leader. As for me, I can’t agree with it more. Indeed, how well they can communicate with people plays a key role in their career. My reasons and examples are given below.
In the first place, smooth communication makes it easy and efficient for leaders to do their jobs. As is known to all, the primary job of a leader is to arrange his employees well and maximize their potentials. Equipped with incredible communicative skills, a leader can make others understand his intentions very well and carry out his plans as quickly as possible. Otherwise, a lot of time and energy will be wasted in endless communications and explanations. For example, my father is the manager of a big company. Albeit extremely busy at work, he is still able to strike a perfect balance between work and life, thanks to his
excellent ability to communicate.
In addition, leaders can always get emotional support because of their wonderful communicative skills. As a proverb goes, language is power. To some extent, how well a person talks determines the extent of his or her popularity. This law especially applies to leaders. Taking American presidential election for example, why those candidates pay so much attention to speeches and debates on media? It is because the use of language is a major part of a leader’s charisma, and a speech or debates is their great opportunity to present their talent in communication, and voters mostly favor those with better communicative skills.
Admittedly, I am not denying the importance of some other qualities that a leader should have, such as time management ability, teamwork spirit and coordinating skills. However, all these qualities above are relatively minor factors if compared with communicative skills which play an fundamental role in a leader’s career, because every single other ability cannot do without the communicative skills.
To sum up, good communicative skills mean a lot to a leader. It is not only because they can bring a higher working efficiency, but also they can make a leader favorable and popular.

With the rapid development of economy, environmental issues are getting increasingly prominent, and modern people’s lives seem to seriously affected by environment pollution. But it is commonly believed that even so, today’s people are still better in protecting
environment than those in the past. As for me, I can’t agree more. My reasons and examples are given below.
In the first place, today’s people possess more advanced technologies to deal with environment problems. As we know to all, the remarkable progress in science and technology makes it more effective to reduce environment pollution. By contrast, in the past, people could do nothing about environmental deterioration due to the lack of technology. For example, in the past, with the flourish of automobile industry, the emission of vehicles caused sever air pollution inside a city, but nowadays, things have totally changed: the popularity of electricity-driven cars makes the city cleaner.
In the second place, with the significant increase in people’s awareness of environmental protection, it is never a hard task to protect the environment. Decades ago, everyone wanted to get rich with paying attention to environment, so the environment fell victim to high-speed economic development. On the contrary, having seen the bad consequences off environmental destruction, today’s people have come to realize the importance of environmental protection. International conferences on environmental issues are held frequently across the world like United Nation Climate Change Conference and many important protocols are signed such as Kyoto Protocol, which is a reflection of modern human beings’ determination in protecting the environment.
Admittedly, some environment-destroying behaviors still exist, especially in less developed areas. Some enterprises discharge wastewater into the river and waste gas into the air, and some local governments just turn a blind eye for the sake of economic benefits. However, since environmental issues are closely related to the survival of human beings,
almost all countries in the world have realized the seriousness of the problem and begin to take effective measures. With the advancement of awareness and technology, I believe, the situation is going to be changed for the better.
In conclusion, modern people are obviously better in protecting the environment than people in the past. It is not only because we now have much more advanced technologies, but also because our awareness of environmental protection has been elevated.

As they grow older, many professional athletes and entertainers fail to sustain their career, thus they may enter other fields, and politics become some of the persons’ next career choice. When it comes to whether it is appropriate for athletes and entertainers to engage in politics, different people have different opinions. From my perspective, athletes and entertainers have their special advantages in the field of politics. I am going to elaborate my opinion by the reasons as follows.
To begin with, athletes and entertainers are good at presenting the best sides of them in front of the public. Only by presenting themselves well on media can they establish a greater fan base, and become more valuable. Likewise, in order to maintain a good relationship with the public, a government officer needs to create a nice image of himself on media. In this regard, athletes and entertainers enjoy obvious advantage. Taking Arnold Schwarzenegger as an example, he was once a famous movie actor before he swore to be the governor of California, US. His popularity in California was to a large extent attributed to his experience in show business.
In addition, public figures like athletes and entertainers are always influential, which makes it easier for them to carry out their administrative programs. Their previous jobs allow them to enjoy a great popularity which will have a longstanding positive influence on their next career. Because of the good impression, people are more likely to continue to support their new identities regardless of what they do. For example, before Ronald Reagan took office in White House, he was a famous actor who successfully played different roles of heroes in many movies, leaving a good impression on a large number of audiences. This should be a major factor that helped him succeed in the presidential election.
Admittedly, I’m not saying that it is impeccable for athletes and entertainers to enter politics. After all, politics are complicated, which requires professional knowledge and years of relevant working experience. If an amateur take an important position, he will probably make a wrong decision and it may well affect a lot of people. However, in a government, there must be other experienced workers who can stop things from going bad and help their new colleagues get back to the right track.
In a nutshell, I don’t see any problem in the phenomenon that athletes and entertainers choose jobs in the field of politics. It is not only because they know how to establish a rapport with the public, but also their already existing influence will help them do a better job.

It is universally acknowledged that a balanced lifestyle and healthy eating habits are important to our life. Lately, a heated discussion has arisen concerning whether the government has done enough to educate its people the importance of a balanced lifestyle
and healthy eating habits. In my opinion, what the government has done is far from enough. I’m going to present two typical cases to prove the validity of my viewpoint.
Firstly, there are two many workers who often work overtime. Due to the increasingly fierce competition in society, lots of employees have to pull an all-nighter to finish endless assignments. As a result, they will feel exhausted next day, but there are still many new assignments waiting to be dealt with. This situation puts them in the state of sub-health. It is commonly observed that many people go to the hospital for an IV drip either or cure diseases or energize their body. Thus, if government successfully aroused citizens’ awareness of keeping fit, there would not be a large number of sub healthy people.
Secondly, junk food and fast food have occupied a large portion of people’s diet structure. With the quickening of modern life, people prefer to eat fast food in order to squeeze some time off for work or study. But the majority of fast food, like hamburger or fried chicken, is unhealthy, high in sugar, fat or salt. Undoubtedly, the excessive intake of these kinds food leads to many diseases. According to survey, three out of ten people in our country are overweight, which reflects a fact that government fails to educate people to keep a healthy eating habit.
Admittedly, I am not saying that government is good for nothing, and it indeed has taken some measures to guarantee its citizens’ healthy. For instance, a lot of funds have been invested in the field of public health care, and we can see the equipment in hospitals is getting increasingly advanced. However, what the government has done is nothing but a remedy aiming to fix the problems, which is just like mending the broken fences. So the government still has a long way to go to be counted as responsible and effective.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw a conclusion that the government has not done enough to educate people to keep a balanced lifestyle and healthy eating habits. In society, a lot of people still work overtime and eat junk food.

City and village are two main kinds of habitats for human beings on the planet, and each place has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, a heated debate has been raised about which one of them is more comfortable for citizens to live in. As far as I am concerned, compared with village, city life caters to my appetite more. I am going to elaborate this point of view in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, city life is more convenient than that of village. As is known to us, advanced public transportation system in urban area provides citizens with a great mobility, which means that they don’t have to spend much time moving from one place to another. By contrast, in village, fewer means of transportation options are available because of the backward infrastructure. Let’s imagine such as a scene: someone gets sick, and he has to be sent to the hospital immediately, which can possibly be done in urban city. If he was in rural area, the consequence might be significantly serious.
In addition, city dwellers can enjoy more opportunities to realize their dreams than villagers do. In cities, especially in metropolises, a great many job opportunities are offered, and also there is superior surroundings where young people can carve out their own business. Unlike a city, a village does not have many big companies and a good business environment. My brother, a smart boy, had been living in the uptown before the age of 23, and farm works
occupied most of his time. Later, the pursuit of better life drove him to move to the city. Through his hard work, he has soon become a department manager in an international corporation.
Admittedly, I am not denying that there are still some weaknesses of city life. For instance, the environment in city leaves much to be desired. We often hear that people in city complain about the worsening living conditions, as air pollutions and water pollutions increase. But villagers are never vexed by these problems. However, the government and the public are trying to figure out effective methods to ease the current situation, and many green technologies are being put into application. I believe that in the near future, city dwellers will enjoy an ideal living environment.
In conclusion, my preference for living in city has been well illustrated by the above-mentioned reasons and examples. Despite some problems, city is still a better place for young people to choose.

People differ from each other, and a team can be made of members with individually distinct characters. Some of them are submissive, while others tend to hold strong personal opinions. Recently, an interesting discussion has arisen about which one of the above -mentioned personalities is more beneficial for group work. Personally speaking, an obedient team member is preferable. My reasons and examples are as follows.
In the first place, an obedient team member can help the team achieve high working
efficiency. It is obvious that a group where all members unite as one is usually full of passion and strength. On the contrary, if team members have disagreements against each other. For example, I once participated in a mathematic modeling competition, together with some of my excellent classmates. Different people had different solutions, and everyone believed his own method to be the best. Due to this huge divergence, we failed the competition.
In addition, submissive members can create a friendly environment in which everyone can work with a good mood. If team members respect each other and have few arguments, they will be more likely to enjoy working together. By contrast, individuals with strong opinions are inclined to be aggressive, imposing great pressure on others. Nobody likes working under such a tension. Taking my uncle for example, he is the owner of a fast food chain store, which has a very low turnover. Most employees have followed my uncle since he started the business. The obedience of the employees contributes to the harmonious environment, where everyone feels happy and enthusiastic.
Admittedly, I am not denying that strong-minded members sometimes bring benefits to a group. For instance, when a group gets bogged in a frustration or a dilemma, they might stand out and contribute some new thoughts and ideas, which might help the team out of the troubles. However, these assertive ideas and thoughts can be very risky, and therefore a strong-minded member stands a fair chance to lead the whole team to a wrong direction.
In a nutshell, compared with those dissidents, an obedient member is obviously more helpful to a team. It is not only because obedient team members can boost working efficiency, but also create a harmonious environment.

Jobs are of great importance to modern people, which enable people to support their families and enjoy a sense of achievement. Recently, an interesting discussion has arisen about which one is a better career choice: a job with high pay and long hours, or a job with average pay and average hours. As for me, I would prefer a job with high income without worrying too much about working hours. I am going to elaborate my point of view in the following paragraphs.
In the first place, high salary allows one to provide his family with better quality of life. It is because we earn money mainly from our jobs, and money can not only guarantee us decent lives, but also raise our sense of happiness in many other aspects. For example, nowadays, education for kids can be very costly. Armed with a high income, one can send his kid to a better school to receive premium education. By contrast, kids born in a family with an average income might be less competitive than others.
Secondly, workers can enjoy a great sense of achievement by taking a job with high salary and long hours. Even though we feel tired when working on a demanding job, the joy after finishing the job will make us realize our value. On the contrary, a job with average income and hours tend to be monotonous and repetitive, in which workers’ passion will wear thin. Jack Ma, the big boss of Alibaba Group, is a good case in point. He devotes most of his time to working. Albeit exhausted, he still exhibits great enthusiasm at work. It is the sense of achievement that drives him to build a business empire gradually.
Admittedly, I am not denying that a job with long hours has some negative impacts on
workers. For instance, one will suffer from headache or even insomnia due to huge pressure and the lack of exercises. However, as long as an employee tries to abandon some unhealthy working habits such as sitting before a computer screen without a rest, they will manage to minimize the bad sides of working for long hours.
In a nutshell, my preference for a job with long hours and high salary can be well illustrated through above-mentioned reasons and examples. It is because people doing this kind of jobs can not only satisfy their families’ material need, but also feel truly happy by actualizing their value.

When speaking of an excellent teacher, we usually refer to someone who can not only help students academically, but also arouse their enthusiasm. But some people believe that kind of teachers to be unrealistic, and under such a fierce competition, it is like a mission impossible for teachers to kill two birds with one stone. From my perspective, the above-mentioned statement seems too pessimistic, and there is a good chance for teachers to make it. I am going to elaborate my point in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, a popular teacher is likely to stir up students’ passion for study. Popular teachers usually have distinctive personal charisma, which can lead students to generate a feeling of affection or even worship for them. As a result, students are more willing to attend their lectures and finish the homework assigned by them. Objectively, these teachers’ charisma works as an impetus to students’ academic performance. My math teacher Sally is a good case. She is an enthusiastic teacher who always fills her class with a lot of fan, using
entertaining and enlightening stories. We all like her very much, and try our best not to let her down in exams.
Secondly, teaching with wonderful methods can make a teacher both popular and effective in helping students learn. Knowledge can be taught in an interesting way. Some effective teaching methods not only enable students to have a deep understanding of knowledge, but also reduce the boredom during the process. If a teacher could adopt those methods, he/she would become popular among students and effective in teaching simultaneously. Jason is another popular teacher in my school. In his English class, we were once required to debate in English and try to convince each other. Since teenagers always desire to excel over others, we did our best to put everything we had learned into practice.
Admittedly, being popular and effective in teaching is never an easy task. After all, every social member is shouldering a great pressure, and teachers are no exception. School leaders and parents are all having high expectations on teachers, hoping them to foster more excellent students. Consequently, teachers have gradually become strict and impatient. However, if those teachers realize the problem and try to take it easy, things will be changed. For instance, if they can learn and practice wonderful teaching methods, students may like them and learn with more efficiency.
In a nutshell, it might be difficult for teachers to be both popular and effective in helping students learn. If they devote themselves to improve their personal charisma as well as teaching methods, they will get close to the goal.

As modern society is developing by leaps and bounds, cooperative ability and leadership appear increasingly important in today’s workplace. Recently, an interesting discussion has arisen about which one of the above-mentioned work skills is of greater significance. From my perspective, compared with leadership, cooperative ability should be given the priority. I am going to elaborate this viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, cooperation can help create a harmonious atmosphere among co-workers. As is known to all, a relaxing and friendly atmosphere can endow people with a nice mood, which allows them to work with more efficiency. By contrast, even a person with great leadership will more or less impose some pressure on others, which will make them feel somewhat uncomfortable. I am a student of computer science and I am lucky to be part of an excellent research team. Even though there is no leader, we still have issued papers on some influential journals, which can be attributed to our spirit of teamwork.
In addition, mistakes could be corrected due to the cooperation between each other. Cooperation lets every member enjoy the equal right to point out the mistakes made by others. The mutual correction could guarantee a right path for the whole team. On the contrary, a strong leader usually deprives the subordinates of the ability and willingness to challenge authority. If that’s the case, there is a good chance for the team to go in a wrong direction. A good case in point is Hitler in Nazi German. He is considered to be a tough leader, but it is his powerful leadership that led the German to the verge of collapse.
Admittedly, I am not denying the value of leadership. For instance, a good leader can use this ability to prevent a team from sliding into chaos, and put everything in order. However, in modern world, the so-called stability and orderliness is likely to impede a team from making
greater success. Only by joint efforts between each other, a member’s creativity and vitality can be activated, which is actually the secret of success.
In a nutshell, from what have been discussed above, a conclusion can be made: the cooperative ability plays a pivotal role in today’s world. It is not only because cooperation creates harmony throughout the team, but also it works as an effective tool to help the team members correct each other’s mistakes.

Summer vacation is a great opportunity for students to engage in meaningful things such as taking part-time jobs, traveling or attending practical courses. In order to enrich students’ summer vacation, a university requires its students to choose one of the following two tasks: to attend a course irrelevant to their major or to do community service. As fa as I’m concerned, doing community service is a better choice. My reasons and examples are given below.
In the first place, community service can raise students’ sense of social responsibility. At school, students do not usually have much time to keep in touch with society, because they have to study hard to get the credits. But social experience is important to one’s overall development. By doing community service, students understand it is not easy to live in this world, which will make them more down-to-earth. I once offered my help to senior citizens in a community. They are some poor old people without any kids around. I helped them clean the rooms and chatted with them. This experience made me realize there are many old people who need care and love.
In addition, students can discover career direction from community service. As competition becomes increasingly fierce, people with new and different thoughts are likely to stand out from the rest. Some amazing ideas just come from doing community service because participates can notice the real needs from residents, and then discover the potential business opportunities. My cousin, together with his team, has developed a popular APP and attracted a major investment. The customers just need to pick what they want and make orders online, and goods will be delivered to their doors as quickly as possible. He told me this idea is derived from one of his community service experience.
Admittedly, I am not denying the value of attending a course irrelevant to their major. It indeed can broaden one’s horizon and help them acquire knowledge of other fields. However, just like an old saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, Though knowledge is good, social experience is of equal importance. Summer vacation is a perfect chance for them to get some social experience, instead of continuously focusing on lectures, textbooks and other academic stuff.
To sum up, compared with attending a course, doing community service should be given enough emphasis. It is because by doing community service, students’ sense of social responsibility will be aroused, and they may discover new opportunities for achieving success.

Recently, in order to develop students’ practical skills, a high school is planning to open one course, and they have options like cooking, managing personal finances and auto repair. The discussion about which practical skill should the students gain has arisen. From my
perspective, the course of managing personal finances should deserve the most attention. I am going to elaborate this opinion by the following reasons.
In the first place, the course of managing personal finances can help students raise the awareness of saving money. Nowadays, many high school students are spoiled, and their parents always try to satisfy their material needs. Therefore, these pampered kids don’t even know how to save money. The course of managing personal finances will make them realize that it is not easy to earn and manage money. Taking my rich cousin for example, he has lots of pocket money. Lacking the sense of managing money, he squanders it by treating friends, or purchasing equipment in online games. Obviously, the course of managing money can probably help him change the situation.
Secondly, the course of managing money can increase the odds for students to gain financial success in the future. It is well known that the management of wealth is vital to everyone. And a person good at managing money is more likely to acquire much wealth. So the course of managing personal finances can help students lay a solid foundation for having such ability. My dad is a good case in point. I am lucky to have a well-off family, which is attributed to my father’s ability to manage money well. Since he was young, he has gained financial knowledge from my grandfather, who was an accountant.
Admittedly, the other two options are also of certain values. Cooking may develop students’ independence, which allows them to eat more healthily. Besides, auto repair is beneficial for their practical ability. However, cooking has apparent disadvantage: it is too risky for a teenager because the inappropriate use of fire could cause a severe consequence. Plus, modern cars are all in good condition, which seldom needs repair. Also, it is convenient
nowadays to get the car fixed in professional repair shops. Thus, learning how to repair cars seems somewhat impractical for high school students.
In a nutshell, the course of managing money is the most important and practical choice for the school. It is because the course could not only make them realize the importance of saving money, but also contribute to their future financial success.

Currently, in order to develop their children’s independence and get them prepared for the future life, many parents encourage their children to engage in part-time jobs. However, some people claim that children’s early exposure to society can be harmful for both their mental health and academic performance. In my opinion, part-time jobs can bring young people many benefits, and thus should deserve extra attention. I am going to elaborate my opinion by the reasons as follows.
To begin with, children can broaden their horizon by taking part-time jobs. If teenagers work part-time, they may confront a variety of headache situations, and in order to overcome them and finish the jobs successfully, children are required to obtain relevant knowledge and skills. As a result, their scope of knowledge can be enlarged greatly. Taking myself for example, I once took a part-time job in a cosmetics company and was assigned to hand out flyers. Though it appeared a simple task, I still learned a lot from it, including how to deal with people and how to distinguish my targets from a big crowd.
In addition, taking part-time jobs enables teenagers to make wise decisions about their
future career. Only by experiencing different jobs can a teenager truly realize what suits him the best. If a teenager has no part-time job experience, how can he understand what role he wants to play in the future? My sister’s experience is just a good case in point. Last summer, she got a part-time job in Starbucks. To my astonishment, she fell in love with the art of making coffee at the very beginning. Therefore, she is determined to be a barista in the future.
Admittedly, I am not saying that it is impeccable for teenagers to take part-time jobs. For instance, they may meet some ill-minded people or see the dark sides of society, which might have a negative impact on the minors’ mentality. However, as long as parents and teachers offer them appropriate supervision and guidance and communicate with them when problems occur, there will be nothing to worry about.
In a nutshell, to teenagers, the advantages of taking part-time jobs outweigh its disadvantages. It is because those work experiences not only allow them to gain necessary survival skills, but also make them realize where their occupational interests lie.
35
This is an ever-changing world. New things keep emerging one after another with each passing day. This phenomenon also triggers a debate about whether people should update their ideas constantly or just stick to what they believe regardless of the changing times. In my opinion, daring to abandon old thoughts and embracing new ones is a necessary quality for anyone who wants to be successful. I am going to discuss about my point of view in the following cases.
In today’s commercial world, one’s refusal of new ideas will knock him out of the fierce competition. With the rapid development of science and technology, every aspect of society is undergoing profound transformation. If someone still runs a business in an old-fashioned way, he is likely to be defeated by a newcomer breaking into his field with new ideas. For example, a new way of hailing a car is gaining popularity with the rise of Apps like Uber. Traditional taxi drivers need to make some changes to their business model, instead of turning a blind eye to this new trend.
In family life, parents who are good at accepting new ideas are beneficial for their kid’ growth. Some parents stubbornly live in their own world, reluctant to accept new ideas, which is actually the real cause of generation gap. By contrast, if parents are willing to embrace new ideas, they will have more common topics with their kids and understand their kids’ thoughts and doings. Currently, carving out one’s own business is a new fashion for college graduates. If a college graduate really has such an idea, his parents should encourage him to make it happen, rather than force him to seek a stable job in a big company.
Admittedly, living in the age of information explosion, we are exposed to too many ideas every day, including good ones and bad ones. Some new ideas may be radical or contrary to universal values, and so accepting this kind of ideas blindly will be detrimental to one’s spiritual world. However, as long as we stay alert and develop the ability to distinguish the good from the bad, there will be nothing to be worried about.
To put it in a nutshell, embracing new ideas and constantly updating our own ideas can prevent us from being left behind the times. One of famous Chinese philosophers once said, “There is no holding back the wheel of history.” New ideas represent new trends of world’s
development. Only by going with historical trends can human being survive and thrive.

As a saying goes, life lies in doing sports. What does that mean? Some people interpret it as that sports can not only give us healthy lifestyles, but also make us know many important truths about life. As far as I am concerned, this interpretation is absolutely correct, and I especially agree that doing sports is indeed a learning experience. I am going to elaborate my viewpoint by analyzing several typical sports as follows.
First of all, in playing football, people can learn how to cooperate. Cooperation, rather than going it alone, is one of important rules of survival in modern society. Those who often play football particularly understand the importance of cooperation. The whole football team needs to fully cooperate with each other, like a sophisticated instrument. The better they can cooperate with each other, the more likely they are to win a game: midfielders are responsible for organizing an attack; strikers attack and score goals; defenders prevent opponents from getting into the box; and the goal keeper tries to keep the clean sheet.
What is more, marathon teaches people persistence. Nowadays, modern people are usually restless without willpower that is needed to help them achieve the goal. Since a young age, we have been told that persistence can lead to success, and this old philosophy completely embodies itself in marathon. The success is never determined only by speed, but by both speed and endurance. In a full marathon, about 26 miles, a participant will encounter many difficulties: thirsty, fatigue, discomfort, boredom, but he needs to focus on the goal with great persistence and willpower.
Other sports like climbing or diving can also make us understand something about life. Just like a beautiful rainbow always shows up after a terrible storm, one couldn’t see the breathtaking views without bearing the pain in the process of climbing or diving. A climber needs to move up little by little against the pull of gravity, and a diver needs to overcome water pressure. Although they engage in different sports, they have one thing in common: to take the most beautiful view as the reward for what they have endured.
In summary, sports really teach us many meaningful lessons which are not available in school. Sports are the best gifts given by God, which makes human beings strong both physically and mentally.

As urbanization is gaining momentum, there has been an influx of people from rural areas into big cities. Thus, this phenomenon has triggered a question: are big cities really attractive? Some people prefer to live in metropolis while others are yearning for the lifestyle in small places. In my opinion, to live in big cities is a better choice for modern people. I am going to elaborate my viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, the means of transportation in the big city is very convenient. It is because city dwellers have various options when they need to move from one place to another, such as taking buses, subways or taxis. On the contrary, there are not many choices available for villagers. My cousin is a good case in point, who used to live in village. She told me that it usually took her about one hour to go to school before. By contrast, in the city , she only has to spend 10 minutes finishing the same distance by subway.
In addition, city dwellers can have more access to opportunities of decent jobs. As we know, there are a number of famous companies, factories, and shopping malls in big cities. In contrast, in small villages, there is less prosperous commercial environment, which means that the odds of getting a good job are slim. Taking my elder brother for example, having graduated from a prestigious university in China a couple of years ago, he chose to go back to hometown—a small village, instead of staying in a big city. Due to the lack of working opportunities, he is currently working as a technician in a local factory, totally wasting his admirable academic background.
Admittedly, I am not denying the benefits of living in small villages. For instance, one can enjoy a more pleasant and healthier environment out there: the water is clean, the sky is blue and the air people breathe has not yet been polluted. However, it is pointless to live in a good environment without having the chance to realize the value of life. It is big cities, rather than small villages, that can provide us with a big stage to make our dreams come true.
To put it into nutshell, people should grasp any chance to stay and develop in big cities. It is not only because the traffic condition is more convenient, but also because city dwellers can have a smoother and more successful career path.

As society is developing by leaps and bounds, tremendous changes have taken place in people’s life. Nevertheless, some senior citizens complain that healthy environment and harmonious interpersonal relationships are gone. As far as I’m concerned, despite some problems that come along with social progress, I still believe today’s life to be easier and
more comfortable than it was when our grandparents were children. I am going to elaborate my viewpoint from three aspects as follows.
To begin with, modern communication technology has reshaped our lives and brought us much convenience. To be more specific, with the wide application of smart phones and Internet, it is possible for people to contact each other more conveniently and efficiently. For example, Lily, one of my best friends, is lucky to be admitted to a famous university in America, which means we cannot hang out together like before. But thanks to the modern communication technology, we still keep in frequent touch with each other on Skype anytime, anywhere. Therefore, it feels like we have never been apart.
Besides, a variety of means of transportation makes it efficient and comfortable for people to move around. Subways, taxis, private cars, and airplanes shorten the distance between places. My grandparents, who live in suburbs, are good examples in point. When they felt like going to the urban center, it usually took them more than one hour in the past, because of the bumpy roads and low-efficient vehicles. But nowadays, with great improvement of road condition and advanced means of transportation, they only have to spend at most 20 minutes traveling from home to the city. In scorching summers, passengers can enjoy cool fresh air inside vehicles equipped with air-conditioner, which makes the trip very comfortable.
Last but not least, today’s ample food supply and various food choices are something beyond imagination in the past. Decades ago, in China, all foods used to be arranged by the government. In other words, it was impossible for people to purchase what they liked to eat. For example, an average family was only allocated 1 jin of pork and 5 jin of rice every week. In
contrast, nowadays, we never have to worry about the shortage of food, because we can buy all kinds of food in supermarket and snack bars all over the city.
To sum up, with the progress of economy and technology, we have enough reasons to believe that today’s life is more comfortable and easier than it was in the past. if our government takes efficient measures to solve the environmental problem, our world will become a better place to live.

It is widely observed that students in high schools are required to study many different subjects at the same time. With this phenomenon comes an opposite opinion that this way of education is obviously putting excessive pressure on students, so requiring students to study only three or four subjects at a time may be more reasonable. In my opinion, a student will benefit more from learning as many subjects as they can in high school. My reasons and examples are given below.
First and foremost, high school period is the prime time for one to learn as much as possible. In high school, a student usually has nothing else to worry about except study, which means if he/she doesn’t seize the chance to take more subjects, he/she is unlikely to make up later. Taking me for example, when I was high school, I didn’t choose the course of graphic design due to my laziness. Later in university, I always wanted to make up this course, only to find a heavy workload left me to extra time, such as my major courses, social activities and job interviews.
In addition, the learning of many different subjects is conductive to a student’s overall development. Modern careers require people to possess a large scope of knowledge. In other words, a person with an interdisciplinary background stands a fair chance to be more successful. Under such circumstances, high schools should help students lay a foundation for the future by requiring students to study as more subjects as possible. For example, math and science make one precise and rational; liberal arts make one emotional and sympathetic. The combination of both can undoubtedly increase one’s chances of being successful.
Admittedly, it might sound plausible that learning many different subjects at the same time is like biting off more than they can chew. Certainly, if students are allowed to study only a couple of subjects, they will feel less stressful. However, nobody can succeed casually. It is true studying many subjects does cost students a lot of energy and time, but they will find out that every effort they’ve made will be rewarded in the future.
In summary, a high school should take the responsibility to demand its students to study as many different subjects as they can. To quote Steve Jobs, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Subjects you studied in high school are just the dots, and they will magically connect with each other and give you a big surprise in the future.

In most cases, schools begin a day’s schedule at an early hour in the morning, while students have complaints about such a setting. It is not uncommon to find out that many students get punished because of being late for school. The debate concerning when a school
day should start has been around for a long time. As far as I am concerned, starting a school day early in the morning is a better approach that is beneficial for students’ learning. My reasons and examples are given below.
First and foremost, morning is the prime time for a student to absorb knowledge. It is because after a whole night’s rest, one’s body is usually at its best in the morning, with the brain awake and active. At this moment, students have good memories and therefore they can study with high efficiency. For example, one of my dorm mates, Jason, is proficient in English, because he gets up earlier than the rest of us, and goes to the classroom to memorize new English words or practice pronunciation every day.
In addition, requiring students to start at an early hour can foster the spirit to overcome difficulties. Students, especially ones at a young age, generally lack the courage to meet challenges. They tend to stay in their comfort zone, with the backlash against anything that discomforts them. Getting up early in the morning may be tough, but it is indeed good for their health and study. If students are allowed to go to school at a late hour, they are likely to keep away from other obstacles earlier than employees. Just because of this spirit, they lead the company to overcome difficulties one after another and achieve remarkable success.
Admittedly, I am not denying the disadvantage of starting school day at an early time. For instance, some students, who live far away from school, can have a real problem. They have to get up much earlier to beat the traffic, and when they come to the school, they may very well be exhausted. However, it is schools’ responsibility to do something for those students. For example, schools can build dormitories to help fix the problem. Anyway, solutions are always more than questions.
To recap, starting school early is a necessary and meaningful arrangement for students. As a proverb goes, “An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.” If students can make good use of morning hours, more productivity will be generated.

As the enrollment of students is expanding, many schools are struggling to pay all kinds of bills. In order to alleviate current financial streets, the school authority decides to stop funding some of the activities provided to students. Now a heated debate has arisen about which one of the following activities deserves a continued investment: sports, arts or volunteering. From my perspective, sports should be the last one to be stopped. My reasons are as follows.
Firstly, sports make students physically strong. High expectations from parents and heavy workload bring enormous pressure to today’s students. Thus, they cannot hang on without a good physical condition. In this sense, sports play an indispensable role in a student’s campus life. If the school stops funding sports, students will fail to do well in study due to the damage on healthy. My high school is a good case in point, which attaches great importance to sports. The school authority would rather purchase sports equipment than spend money on the decorations of teaching buildings. We students are real beneficiaries of our school’s policy—having good bodies.
Besides, sports provide students with an experience different from study, which is conducive to students’ overall development. As an old saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Going to school is not all about study, and there must be something
different for students to experience. Sports are such ideal activities in which students learn to compete against others and cooperate with team members, and they also realize the importance of being higher, faster and stronger. Those qualities are lifelong assets. Many successful figures, like Jack Ma, the president of Alibaba Group, may be not straight-A student back in schooldays, but they share one thing in common: the love for sports.
Admittedly, I am not denying the importance of arts and volunteering. They do have their own values respectively. For instance, arts nurture student’s ability to appreciate the beauty of the world, and volunteering activities help them develop a sense of social responsibility. However, these advantages are dwarfed by that of sports, because sports are closely linked to one’s health, and without a good body, nothing can be accomplished.
From what have been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that school should by no means cut down the expenditure on sports. It is not only because sports guarantee good body conditions for students but also endow them with valuable qualities that will be beneficial in their whole lives.

Space is such an unfathomable existence that drives generations of human beings to tap into its secret. Many substantial countries consider space exploration as one of its most important national-level strategic programs. Thus, an interesting discussion arises among the public about whether this kind of investment is worth it. As far as I am concerned, space exploration is absolutely not a waste of money, and has its incomparable values. My viewpoint is based on the following reasons.
Firstly, a great many essential and widespread technologies are fruits of space exploration. Space exploration gives human beings a whole new perspective to look at our planet. High above the earth, we are able to observe the changing of clouds as well as formations of the Earth’s surface, which not only betters our understanding of the Earth but also provides great convenience to our life. The invention of GPS is a good case in point. Based on the information coming from satellites, GPS can tell people the exact location of any place they want to go, and figure out the shortest route to reach there.
Secondly, a country can showcase its comprehensive national power by exploring space, enhancing its international presence. Space exploration is a reflection of a country’s strength in economy and science and technology. A country with cutting-edge technology and abundant capital will have a greater say in international affairs. For example, during cold war, two superpowers, Soviet Union and the US, compete against each other in trying to get the control of the universe. When Soviet Union announced its successful launching of manned space aircraft, the US was reluctant to show weakness and unprecedentedly sent astronauts onto the Moon, which greatly enhanced the international influence of the US.
Admittedly, space exploration seemingly has little to do with ordinary people’s livelihood, and it really accounts for quite a share in country’s fiscal budget. That explain why some would express opposing opinions towards the practice. However, it is just a shortsighted view that space exploration is worthless. Looking into the future, we have reasons to believe that if space technology is monopolized by a few countries, a country without the technology will lose the upper hand in international competition.
To recap, space exploration is of far-reaching implication to a country. It is not only
because the rank and file can be a direct beneficiary of space exploration, but also because the practice to explore the space endows a country with many additional values.

Tourism has become a mainstay of economy in many countries. If a country wants to attract more visitors, it should possess not only a secure environment but also a couple of amazing tourist spot. Then, which factor above weighs more? Opinions differ from one person to another. As far as I’m concerned, more efforts should be made to improve its tourist attractions, like repairing old buildings and streets. My reasons and examples are given below.
To begin with, tourists visit a country for its wonderful attractions, not for security. Nobody will be stupid enough to spend a big sum of money on the flight and hotel to just enjoy the safety of a place. If that’s the case, they do not have to go anywhere because home is the safest place in the world. As a matter of fact, some tourism enthusiasts even take risks to visit dangerous places in order to appreciate the breathtaking views there. For example, I have a friend who is tired of regular tourist destinations. And last year, he went to Iraq alone to visit some places of historic interest, paying no attention to local unsafe factors.
In addition, a high-quality tourist attraction can speak for itself, which brings more visitors. It is true that a famous tourist attraction is the main reason why tourists come, but if it is out of repair for long years, the charm of the spot will gradually fade away. Obviously, it is government’s compelling obligation to repair those tourist attractions and restore the beauty and splendor in the past. Taking Forbidden City in Beijing for example, the government is making an unceasing effort to repair all the buildings and streets inside. This conduct makes
Forbidden City a world-class tourist spot, attracting a large number of visitors each year.
Last but not least, hiring too many policemen is a double-blade sword. On the hand , a strong police power serve as an effective deterrence against crimes. On the other hand, too much police patrol in scenic regions will create an air of tension. Visitors will get a feeling that something is wrong with the place and this feeling will really make them uneasy and dampen their spirits. This is definitely not what the government wants to see.
In summary, between hiring police and repairing old buildings and streets, the latter is a wiser conduct. It is not only because the tourist spot will absolutely lead to the surge of tourists.

For any government, there is always a lack of effective ways to encourage the public to conserve energy. One feasible method they rend to adopt is to elevate the price of energy with the hopes of forcing the citizens to reduce the waste of it. But the effectiveness of this approach has been increasingly questioned. In my opinion. raising the price of gasoline and electricity is the last resort, and couldn’t solve the problem fundamentally. My reasons and examples are given below.
Firstly, raising the price could intensify the conflict between the public and the government. As an integral part of people’s basic livelihood, electricity and gasoline are the most widely used energy. Thus, any change in the prices will affect the public’s nerve. Also, it is government’s responsibility to lessen people’s financial burden instead of doing
something against their interests. I have read a piece of news that a few years ago, the ruling party of England increased the electricity fees, hoping to alleviate the power shortage, but this conduct yielded nothing but a strong backlash.
Secondly, for the rich, increasing the price of energy doesn’t make any difference. It is because government is unlikely to bring the price of energy to the point that even nobody can afford, so it will not genuinely strengthen social members’ awareness of energy conservation. Plus, it is those rich people who are major consumers of energy. A good case in point in Al Gore, a former American vice president who has received a Nobel Peace Prize for his battling climate change. But a scandal shattered this image: he once squandered a great deal of energy on his daughter’s birthday party.
Admittedly, I am not denying the good side of raising the price of energy. This method indeed can make people pay attention to their use of energy, because the cost is going up after all. However, although increasing the price of energy can reduce the symptom, it cannot cure the problem once and for all. Also, it probably triggers public anger, which is an expected side-effect. Government is more advised to figure out other ways to arouse the public’s awareness of energy conservation without harming their interests.
In conclusion, I am opposed to the idea of encouraging energy conservation by increasing the prices of gasoline and electricity. In modern world, government should manage the whole society through some smart ways rather than simple and crude ones.

Problems and conflicts not only occur between enemies, but also occur between friends, even between long-time friends. Some people say frankly that they find it hard to put up with the friend who has done something nasty. As far as I am concerned, I will not discontinue a long-time friendship just because my friend have done something I do not like. I am going to elaborate this viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, tolerance is the cornerstone of friendship. A nice friend must be good at bearing people’s shortcomings and imperfections, which can bring a sense of security and warmth. If nobody was willing to tolerate his or her friend’s mistakes, there would have been no long-lasting friendship in the world. I remember when I was in high school, one of my best friends Tom cheated in the exam. As the monitor of the class, I told the teacher about his misconduct. To my big surprise, he didn’t hate me but acknowledge his fault. It is Tom’s tolerance that makes a great friendship between us. Next time if he does something I do not like, I will tolerate him as well.
Secondly, a friend might sometimes do something that discomfort us, but with good intentions. They just do it in an unpleasant way. If we can discern the goodwill behind what they do, we are likely to change from being angry to grateful. Thus, it is obviously unwise to discontinue the friendship with a long-time friend just because of misunderstanding. Still taking for example the above-mentioned experience of mine, my conduct of informing the teacher appears somewhat unkind and even harsh to a friend, but my intention was to teach Tom a lesson that cheating is a wrong thing to do.
Admittedly, I am not saying that we have to be a doormat all the time if our friend do something that makes us unhappy. As a matter of fact, a blind tolerance simply makes things
worse. However, an open and sincere talk can play a very effective role in dissolving the tension between friends. During the talk, we may find that our friend does it just for the good of us or there is a misunderstanding.
To put it in a nutshell, a long-lasting friendship stands the test of difficulty. Chairman Mao, the founder of PRC, once said, “Long live the mutual understanding.” If we think less about ourselves and care more about our friends, the world will become a better place to live.

History courses are part of university curriculum, and students are required to study them for credits. But recently, a hot topic has arisen among students about whether studying history is just a waste of time, especially for students of engineer and science. As far as I’m concerned, all students, in spite of their majors, are highly advised to take history courses. I am going to elaborate this viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
First of all, history courses can bring one’s perspective to a higher level. Even though ancient people lived in an age very different from today, the way they acted and thought can still be applied to all aspects of modern life. And therefore, understanding what they did and how they looked at issues is of great significance to us. For example, my father is a successful business leader. Once he told me that doing business was like fighting a battle, and the way he managed his team, how he won negotiations with business partners were derived from his interest in studying classic cases of ancient wars.
Besides, history courses give students an opportunity to learn about mistakes in history. It
is true that history repeats itself, but it would be tragic and disastrous if we let the same mistakes happen over and over again. Only by familiarizing that can benefit the present. The year of 2015 was the 70th anniversary of the end of WW Ⅱ, and the whole world celebrated it by various activities in order to warn the world of what a war could bring to human beings. Therefore, history courses in university serve as a constant warning bell, keeping young generation vigilant.
Admittedly, it is indeed inappropriate to require students of science with poor grades to study history courses, because history courses obviously consume their time that is supposed to be spent on major courses. However, with the consideration of the importance of history education, school authorities can turn required history courses into optional courses or lectures for those kinds of students, which not only provide them with necessary knowledge of history but also free them from the pressure of study.
In conclusion, the history education is needed to foster well-rounded talents. Just as a Chinese proverb goes, history is like a mirror, enabling one to predict ups and downs. A good command of history helps us live well for the present and make full preparations for the future.

Life is an experience of setting goals and achieving them. Some people work hard to pursue ambitions goals while others devote to realistic ones. Then, which goal setting makes more sense for modern people? This question has aroused a heated debate in society recently. As far as I am concerned, we should set our goals as high as possible in order to achieve the
best result. I am going to elaborate this viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
For individuals, the higher the goal is, the better the result will be. It is because there is always a gap between reality and dream. Higher goals can galvanize people to push to the limit and achieve more. Instead, aiming at realistic goals, people are more likely to produce results less than they expect. For example, when I was in high school, my father usually encouraged me to set the goal of a test score beyond my ability, so that I would force myself to work harder every time to get closer to that goal. Thanks to my father’s strategy, my test score was always far above my expectation.
For all mankind, ambitious goals allow human beings to boldly go where no one has gone before. Without audacious dreams, the world would not have been what it is today. It is those “unrealistic” dreams that drive human beings to break new ground and make new breakthroughs all the time. Jack Ma, probably the most famous Chinese businessman, once proposed that he wanted to build an e-commerce platform for all merchants to do business, but at that time he was just considered nothing but a guy talking idiotic nonsense. If Jack Ma had not set such a goal, there would not have been Alibaba Group, a great enterprise changing the lives of millions.
Admittedly, I am not denying the advantages of realistic goals. Compared to ambitious ones, realistic goals are more attainable and less stressful. However, the obsession with realistic goals will make people short-sighted, reducing their possibility to think out of the box and get what is out of their reach. In this sense, people with ambitious goals are inclined to make a significant success.
In summary, it is more meaningful for people to follow ambitious goal rather than realistic ones. I am a big fan of a movie, Turbo, in which a line has left me a deep impression: No dream is too big, and no dreamer is too small. Thus, let’s never be stingy about our dreams. Make them big and make them happen.

With the advent of information age, the Internet has profoundly influenced every aspect of modern people’s life. Under such a background, how does the government play its role? Should the government offer Internet access to all citizens at no cost? These questions triggered heated debates in society. From my perspective, the Internet access, like other important public services, should be available to the public free of charge. I am going to elaborate my viewpoint in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, charge-free policy allows more people to enjoy Internet-based public services. Under the encouragement of cost-free policy, an increasing number of people will be more willing to get access to the Internet and then benefit from government services which is optimized by the Internet. At present, many unprivileged people are kept from using Internet a lot because they worry about the money they have to pay for Internet. Thus, they are unable to enjoy Internet to their heart’s content. Since the government tries to develop the new economy which is based on Internet, it should get rid of people’s concerns in the first place.
Secondly, the economy will be the beneficiary of government’s policy of free access to Internet. Once the government cancels the cost of using the Internet, e-commerce is expected to grow in leaps and bounds. More people will choose to start up business online, and many
job opportunities will be therefore created, which also give an impetus to the development of supporting industries such as logistics. The success of Alibaba Group is a perfect refection of Internet’s positive influence on the economy. If the government offers free Internet access to all citizens, there will be more enterprises like Alibaba Group emerging one after another.
Of course, we have to admit that free Internet access will bring tremendous pressure on government budget. After all, the construction of network, similar to the building of other major infrastructures, is a huge project that consumes intensive labor and funds. However, the government can cover the expenditure via other ways, including levying a tax on those profitable Internet-based business.
In conclusion, making the Internet access free of charge is a valuable and far-reaching effort for the government. In the age of Internet, the government should play a greater role in leading its people to embrace this new age.

Whether at school or at work, doing projects is what modern people should face every day. The approaches of dealing with projects can vary from one person to another. Some prefer to handle projects one by one while others are big fans of multi-tasking. It is still debatable about which way is more effective. As for me, the ability to concentrate on one project at a time means a lot to modern people. My reasons and examples are given below.
Firstly, it will be time-saving to finish projects one after another. It is because when focusing on what they are doing with no distracters around, people will enjoy a higher
working efficiency. If people have to process different tasks simultaneously, that will be more time-consuming than doing one thing at a time. Taking myself for example, I occasionally do some translation for foreign trade companies to earn some pocket money. I don’t take a new task until the last one is finished. Only in this way can I devote my mind to one job and finish it as soon as possible.
Secondly, we can guarantee the quality when dealing with one project at a time. It is obvious that people will achieve better result if all concentration and enthusiasm are placed on one single task. On the contrary, with different projects at hands, their attention is highly likely to be torn apart, and the quality of the projects will be therefore affected. My neighbor is a renowned painter in town, who attaches great importance to the quality of his works. He once told me about his little secret of success: immersing himself in one single piece of work each time.
Admittedly, I am not denying that it is advantageous to handle two or more projects simultaneously. As a matter of fact, it is multi-tasking that leads people to more productivity. However, between quality and quantity, the former seems to have priority over the latter in modern society. The high quality of projects has become the common pursuit of all companies and individuals. Thus, doing one thing at a time is more beneficial to the guarantee of the quality.
To recap, it is better to finish a project and then move on to the next one. Depending on one single product-iPhone, Apple has firmly secured its NO.1 position in smart phone industry, defeating time-honored brand names like Nokia and Samsung. This is the power of concentration.

Whether you believe it or not, approximately 25 percent of families worldwide keep pets ranging from dogs to crocodiles. The number of pet owner is on the rise and so is their expenditure on pets. This phenomenon triggers a discussion about whether it is wise to spend a big sum of money on pets regardless of better ways to use the money. Although I do not keep a pet, I still believe that keeping a pet is a worthwhile thing to do, especially for the following two cases of people.
For senior citizens, pets can make a great company. When people are getting old, their sense of loneliness also grows with each passing day. With sons and daughters not around, old couples naturally need something to place their emotion. In this regard, pets can serve as their family members to drive away their loneliness. For someone who has lost his or her spouse, pets might become their sole emotional support. My neighbor is an old widow without any children, but she still lives a happy and enriched life because she keeps a Chihuahua that makes her life full of fun.
For kids, keeping pets is conductive to their mental development. As we all known, most kids in China grow up without siblings, and pets make up for this imperfection. In the process of keeping a pet, kids not only learn what unconditional love is, but also how to shoulder responsibility. For example, my cousin Justin is the only child in his family. Instead of being spoiled and pampered, he knows exactly how to deal with others and how to take care of someone younger. This is all because he has been growing up with his best buddies—a golden retriever.
Admittedly, we also can find examples of some pet owners who spend too much money on their beloved pets, even beyond their means. This practice, in my eyes, is like putting the cart before the horse. After all, keeping a pet is not all of one’s life. However, as long as a pet owner keeps the expenditure in a rational level, there would be nothing to worry about.
To recap, I firmly believe keeping a pet is worth the money. In some sense, a pet is just like a special friend, to whom we can create an emotional attachment. Maybe someday in the future, I will have such a special friend around.

Cooking and preparing foods are supposed to be a basic skill for human beings, but we fail to see that this skill is well passed on to modern young people. Fierce competition and survival pressure leave them no time to enjoy a meal make by their own hands. Thus, some sociologists predict that people will spend less time cooking and preparing foods in twenty years. As for me, I have to admit they are right about the trend. My reasons and examples are as follows.
Firstly, mounting pressure makes it an unrealistic dream for modern people to cook at home. Students face endless assignments, and their pushy parents certainly do not want them to squander some time in kitchen. Young office workers, for better pay or promotion, usually work overtime. 20 years from now, when those young adults become busier and face more pressure, they will naturally tend to avoid cooking by themselves. Taking myself for example, I do not cook because it is truly time-consuming. If I go to market and prepare everything for a dinner, there will be little time for me to deal with my study.
Secondly, eating is actually getting amazingly convenient thanks to the progress of the Internet. With the division of labor in society, the idea that professional people do professional things is becoming a reality. With a click of a button, delicious food will be delivered to the door of our home. People never put up with the smell of cooking and get their hands dirty in sink. The lunch I had yesterday was ordered from an online fast food store, and it was a wonderful combination including seafood, vegetable and rice. What’s more, the price was reasonable and I did not have to wait for long.
Of course, I have to admit that cooking can be a favorable hobby to some of us, and I can vicariously feel the sense of achievement when others praise us for the wonderful meal made by our own hands. However, it would be hard to make a hobby a daily routine. With the increasingly fierce competition, young people are bound to spend less time on food preparation.
In conclusion, the trend that people eat out or order food online will continue. By and large, it is not a bad thing that people gradually lose the ability to cook well, because this trend is a reflection of a more and more professional society.

University courses can be roughly classified into two categories: liberal arts and science. Both of them are considered as the cornerstone of social development. Lately, an interesting discussion has arisen about whether all university students should be required to take basic science courses even if they are not in the career goal. From my perspective, basic science courses are a necessity for every university student. My reasons and examples are as follows.
Firstly, science is the primary productive force. From the past to present, numerous cases have proved that the world’s development is based on the remarkable progress of science and technology. University students, whatever their majors are, will benefit a lot from the basic science courses they have taken. Students of science can certainly enhance their foundation of scientific knowledge, and those who study liberal arts will be more competitive in job market when having a basic understanding of science. In modern society, almost all individuals who have changed the world have taken science courses in university, such as Steve jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Ma.
Besides, what students learned in basic science courses will exert positive influence on their future careers. These valuable assets they can amass in science courses are logical thinking, analytical skills, the spirit to question authority and the emphasis on experiments. In fact, these qualities are the premise of high working efficiency. Let’s look at this counter example. If one has never been exposed to any science courses, he must lack scientific working methods. Thus, he is likely to try to put any idea that he comes up with into practice without testing its feasibility, which may lead to an expected failure.
Admittedly, requiring all students to study basic science courses appears somewhat arbitrary and unilateral, because it is not appropriate to make basic science courses mandatory for some liberal-arts students who even have difficulty with their own majors. However, given the significant role that scientific qualities play in one’s future career, school authorities can add into the teaching schedule a proper number of basic science courses.
In conclusion, it is meaningful and necessary for every college student to take basic science courses, including students of liberal arts, because what they have learnt in science
courses will be possibly conducive to their future career.

Helping others has always been a virtue. It is a common belief that young people should offer a helping hand to those in difficulties. However, with rapid development of economy, people begin to be increasingly concerned about material success, creating a selfish young generation. As far as I am concerned, today’s young people are less altruistic than those in the past. I am going to further elaborate my point of view in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, today’s children are spoiled. As modern people are getting richer, they always do as much as they can to provide their kids with the best condition and satisfy their kids’ demand. Too much of parents’ love and care has gradually given their kids a sense of superiority, and deprived them of the ability to respect and help others. I often observe in a bus that young people sit in the seats reserved for senior citizens. Even though an elder is standing beside, some youngsters still pretend to be absorbed in video games, forgetting the social responsibility to offer chairs to those in need.
Secondly, the pressure confronted by young people is chokingly high, leaving them almost no time to help others. As is known to all, students have to work very hard to get admitted into good universities. After graduation, what awaits them is not a relaxing life but a fiercer competition in the job market. Such a stressful lifestyle makes them feel less encouraged to help others. Imagine that a young man hurries to go to work, for there is an emergency waiting him to deal with. Under such circumstances, he cannot afford the time to help people around like bringing a lost child to the police.
Admittedly, I am not saying that all the young people keep themselves away from helping others. In fact, it is not uncommon to find many school volunteer programs that aim to help those in need. However, quite a few charitable and volunteer activities engaged by young people are built on practical purposes. Some young people do them just for gaining extra credits, while others want to make their resume appear more attractive by adding those experiences.
To put it in a nut shell, today’s young people are less willing to help others than previous generations, because they are born and raised in a different period of time. As a matter of fact, government and society should ponder over the negative impacts brought by economic prosperity upon young generation.

Students organization is no longer a fresh word to students, which opens the door to a colorful campus life. When it comes to electing a leader for a student organizing, there are usually many factors to be taken into account. Some people claim that honesty is the most important one. But in my opinion, that is a biased assertion because some qualities weigh more than honesty. I am going to highlight two qualities in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, the candidate’s coordination ability is of vital importance. In order to accomplish the goal of student organization, the leader should be good at taking advantage of all kinds of resources including manpower, materials and funds. For example, my cousin is in charge of a popular photography club in his university. His excellent coordination ability helps the club grow stronger. He once led his team to hold an on-campus photography exhibition, which
was very well received. Not only did he manage to mobilize all members to pitch in, but also he raised enough sponsorship fees from some enterprises.
Secondly, leading by example is another necessary quality for a leader. Inarguably, students are nowadays confronted with a lot of pressure from study and other personal issues to take care of. It is indeed difficult for them to sacrifice their personal interests for engagement in tasks of student organizations. If a leader lacks the spirit of sacrifice and cares about himself more than the organizing, no one is willing to do his or her part. In contrast, if a leader burns the midnight oil to design activity plans, and works harder than anyone else, rather than bosses around in activity site, his team members’ passion must be ignited.
Admittedly, I am not denying the importance of being honest. It is true that an honest leader, who always gives people a sense of security, stands a fair chance to be trusted by his team members. However, as a personal virtue, honest cannot work as a driving force to the development of an organization. In this sense, it is arbitrary and unilateral to conclude that honesty is the most important factor to be considered in electing a leader for a student organization.
In conclusion, when I am helping to elect the future student leader from candidates, I do not agree that honesty should come first. In order to lead the team to a greater achievement, a leader should possess more important qualities, such as coordination ability and spirit of sacrifice.

In one’s life, there are countless problems to face. Then people have always been in pursuit of proper strategies to solve those problems, and their opinions are divided. Some people deem creativity as the only source of solutions to a problem while others prefer to plan carefully before taking any action. As far as I am concerned, planning carefully is a more effective problem-solving skill than being creative. Here are my reasons and examples.
To begin with, a thoughtful planning can help us find the real cause of a problem. A problem, with a complicated cause, is not always what it looks like. If we fail to get a grip of its cause, we stand no chance to tackle it successfully, no matter how creative we are. A detailed planning is likely to lead us to the cause. For a doctor, when facing a patient with a symptom of flu, he will not simply prescribe some cold medicines but have the patient undergo a series of check-ups such as blood test or even X ray. The check-ups are somewhat a careful plan before making a right decision.
In addition, productivity and efficiency will be greatly improved by careful planning. If we miss this step, any creative idea coming from brainstorming are nothing but efforts in vain. I, myself, serve as a good example. Every time at the end of the semester, I am always as busy as a beaver, because I have to prepare for final exams, write papers of different subjects, and work on some research reports. Without planning, I will easily get lost in such a busy schedule. Thus, I make a “to do” list according to priorities of tasks and mark the finished items as I move forward. In this way, I can manage my time well and solve multiple problems at the same time.
Admittedly, I am not denying the value of coming up with creative ideas to solve a problem. For instance, as an old saying goes, “Man proposes, God disposes.” Under some
circumstances, things do not go as we expected. A creative person can always have a quick respond to an emergency. However, it is OK for being creative to be the last resort in extreme cases, but it should never displace planning carefully as the main approach towards problems.
In the end, I would like to sum up this composition by quoting an ancient Chinese proverb:“ Preparedness ensures success and unpreparedness spells failure.” The proverb means a good plan always leads to the successful settlement of a problem.

As Internet technology advances at an accelerating rate, social networking is no longer a fresh word to modern people. Allegedly, net citizens all over the world upload a sea of information onto various social networking websites every day. This phenomenon triggers a heated debate on whether it is proper to create personal information on social media. Personally speaking, there is nothing wrong with this practice. Instead, it brings lots of benefits to both individuals and society. Reasons and examples are given below.
For individuals, uploading personal information on social networking websites is an important way to enhance interpersonal relationship. Inarguably, we will feet it is interesting to learn about what is happening to our friends by browsing information they have poster on social media, including texts, pictures, and videos. They must feel the same way when checking out ours. This kind of interaction shortens the distance between friends, even between strangers. Every time I travel to a beautiful place, I will take many pictures and post everything I like about it on Twitter and . Minutes later, I will receive lots of my friends’ comments, which is indeed an effective social interaction.
For society, positive information pasted onto social media encourages more people to take actions to make the world a better place. With the help of social networking, a tiny good idea coming from an individual stands a fair chance to spark up the whole society’s passion. Recently, starting from unknown sources, an activity called “smile challenge” has dominated Chinese Internet environment. The activity demands participants to post the pictures of the challenger’s smile and their own smile online and pass the challenge on. Aiming to arouse the public’s awareness of children suffering from cleft lip and palate, this activity soon gets support from all work of life.
Granted, uploading personal pictures and other information on social networking websites can have some downsides. For instance, the security of our personal information will be put at risk, since our home addresses and telephone numbers may be exposed unconsciously. However, as long as we pay extra attention to what we decide to upload and make sure that the information does not involve anything related to our or others’ privacy, there is nothing to be worried about.
In short, it is totally appropriate to upload pictures and other information onto the social networking websites. Facing the advent of the age of social networking, we should learn to embrace it instead of running away from it, even though minor problems do exist.

There is no denying that education has become one of the most important expenditures for a family. Not only do some parents try to provide their kids with premium educational resources, but also they involve themselves in kids’ doing their schoolwork. The practices
reflect the so-called “poor parental love,” which is also a widely observed phenomenon. However, I choose to stand on the opposite side os it. My reasons and examples are given below.
First of all, doing schoolwork independently deepens students’ understanding of what they have learnt in school. Given that knowledge can only be well absorbed through repetition, schoolwork provides a perfect opportunity for students to review and repeat things they have learnt. If someone else gets involved in the process, students will fail to complete the absorption and digestion of the knowledge. Imagine that a father, who is good at math, often helps his daughter with her math homework. Even though the girl’s homework is perfectly finished, her math teacher will not be able to measure how much knowledge she has grasped.
Also, encouraging students to do schoolwork all by themselves contributes to their overall development. Without the help of others, students have no choice but to deal with tasks assigned by teachers on their own. In the process, they will gradually learn to think independently, search for materials in library and turn to someone else for help when encountering unexpected problems. My cousin serves as a counter example. He frequently asked his parents to do the homework for him, leading him to become lazy and dependent. Consequently, being short of necessary academic abilities, he failed in the exams many times and may not graduate.
Admittedly, I am not saying that parents should pay no attention to their kids’ homework. In a sense, parental participation does have some advantages. For instance, since some kids lack self-discipline, parent’s supervision can effectively prevent those kids from
being easily distracted by something else. However, parents are highly advised not to interfere with the process of kids’ doing their homework. Otherwise, kids would be deprived of the opportunity to grow up academically.
In brief, it is out of question that parents should encourage their kids to do the schoolwork independently. From the past to present, study has always been an individual’s own business. As an integral part of your study, schoolwork should never be done by someone else for you.

When it comes to purchasing expensive good, people are inclined to think twice. They are most likely to be influenced by information sources from friends and colleagues, from media, or from salesman in the market. In my opinion, among all those factors that will affect them, friends or colleagues’ recommendations play the most important role in helping people make the final decision. I am going to elaborate my point of view in the following paragraphs.
First of all, friends and colleagues are more sincere to us. When giving us information about a certain product, our friends or colleagues tend to share with us their true feelings about it. In contrast, TV commercials and salesmen may well brag about the quality of the product, so as to persuade us to pay the money as soon as possible. For example, if I plan to purchase a car in a Automobile 4S shop, the salesperson will usually lure me to buy a more expensive one with all kinds of coupons and gifts. However, if I resort to a friend who knows cars well, he will guide me to buy the one much suitable for my situation.
In addition, friends and colleagues provide us with more valuable information about the product. On no account could they give us useful information about a product without the experience of using it. Thus, they must have a deep understanding of the product in terms of its quality, function and value. In this sense, their advice is more worth considering. Taking myself for example, I have been very satisfied with the computer that was bought the other day. Except for its reasonable price, its performance far exceeds my expectation, which is attributed to the recommendation from my friend Jack, who has already had one.
Admittedly, I am not saying that recommendation from friends and colleagues are absolutely correct. It is because they may have their personal preferences when buying the goods, and therefore what they recommend to us may not be perfectly fit for our own situations. However, as long as we are fully aware of our true needs and avoid following others’ footsteps blindly, there will be nothing to worry about.
In conclusion, when it comes to a major purchase, I prefer to turn to my friends and colleagues for commendations or advice. It is not only because their words are more reliable but also because their information can help us reduce the risk of making false decisions.

China’s economy is taking off, which brings a lot of benefits to its people including a great increase in their purchasing power. In recent years, people have become keener on buying things than ever before. Thus, a heated debate has arisen among the public about the cause of people’s growing passion for shopping. The way I see it, following suit is most likely to be the very factor that drives people to purchase. I am about to justify my viewpoint by
discussing two typical cases.
The first case is the zeal for buying electronic products. As we know, the rapid development of science and technology keeps people updating their electronic products all the time. Those equipped with latest versions of high-tech gadgets are labeled as tasteful and fashionable icons. In order to be like that, people, especially the young, tend to follow trendy individuals-to buy just exactly what they have. For example, whenever new iPhone came out in the market, there is a fever of purchasing all over the world. Of course, people do buy iPhones to facilitate communication, but they probably more want to catch up with the times.
Finance products are the other good case in point. Under most circumstances, due to the lack of a clear idea about how to buy financial products, people are inclined to follow the footsteps of others, considering that this is an effortless way to do about their wealth. In stock market, there are a multitude of amateur investors like senior citizens, or some illiterates. They neither spend time studying the trend of the market nor investigate what’s going on with the listed companies, and they do nothing but to follow some so-called professional ones to buy stocks.
Admittedly, I am not saying that people buy products without any practical purposes. It is impossible for people to buy something useless, and the practicality of what they buy is always their No.1 concern. However, if we analyze the deep motivation of consumers when they shop, we can find that they are more likely to buy something that others have already had, because nobody is willing to be Guinea pigs to any new product.
To put it in a nutshell, people buy products not because they really need them but
because others have had them. Owing to the limitation of room, I am unable to give more cases, but I believe that the above-mentioned electronic products and finance products have already proven the validity of my viewpoint.

As modern world becomes increasingly complicated, young people are required to be versatile to achieve success in their life or career. Thus, people are beginning to discuss about which abilities are essential for the young generation. Some people point out that the ability to plan and organize plays a fundamental role in helping young people survive this highly competitive society, and I believe this without a doubt. My reasons and examples are given below.
To begin with, the ability to plan keeps us from losing ourselves in endless tasks. As is known to all, today’s young people have to deal with far greater number of tasks than people did in the past. If one lacks the ability to plan, he would drown in tons of jobs, because things keep popping out all the time. Taking a modern college student for example, he usually has plenty of work to do, but time is always pressing. In a short period of time, he may have to handle a term paper, earn extra credits by playing the role as a teaching assistant, and search for an internship program. Under such a circumstance, a good plan can clearly help him allocate his time and energy well, which guarantees an efficient accomplishment of all the tasks.
In addition, the ability to organize enables young people to make better use of accessible resources to help them achieve goals. In modern world, one cannot achieve anything without
resources such as social connections, funds or information. More importantly, these resources only work when being integrated together in a proper way. For example, my cousin, the head of a college photography club, has made his club very popular among students, which is absolutely attributed to his excellent ability to organize. He once held a successful photography exhibition on campus. Before that, he mobilized every member to pitch in for this activity, and settled the fund issue by finding some sponsors outside the campus.
Admittedly, I am not denying the fact that there are other important abilities that young people should possess: the ability to express themselves, the ability to make new friends, or the ability to empathize with others. However, as I mentioned before, the ability to plan and organize plans a fundamental role in young people’s lives or work. The two essential abilities are like the cornerstone on which other abilities are built.
From what has been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that the development of the ability to plan and organize is of vital importance to young people at present times. It is because the ability to plan improves our efficiency of handling tasks, and the ability to organize helps us optimize the use of resources around us.

Thanks to the progress of technology, modern people are capable of knowing about almost everything happening around the world quickly and timely. Some people claim that it is pointless to learn about the events without direct connection to us, while others believe we would better grasp all kinds of information regardless of whether it affects our lives or not. As for me, I prefer the latter perspective, and I am going to discuss about it by the following two
cases.
For students, knowing about global news is beneficial for their overall development. Even though some news does not have anything to do with their lives, the process of gaining them can be a real eye-opening experience, which broadens students’ horizon and deepens their understanding of the world. My cousin is a good case in point. Her parents have installed a satellite TV at home so as to encourage her to know more about the world. Having watched abundant global news on BBC or CNN, my cousin has expanded her scope of knowledge. I am often amazed by her opinions on global issues, which are more insightful than that of her peers.
For adults, grasping worldwide events allow them to make better decisions. It is because a seemingly irrelevant event is likely to have an impact on our lives in a roundabout way. A wise decision must be made by considering all kinds of valuable information. For example, my uncle is a businessman who owns a gas station. In 2003, when he learnt that the US might use force against Iraq, he predicted that the price of oil would soar in a short period of time. Thus, he timely purchased a great deal of oil at a low price, which helped him make a good fortune after the breakout of the war.
Admittedly, I am not saying that we should be mindful of everything that is happening in the world given the limitation of our time and attention. Spending time on a sea of information would distract us from doing what we should do. However, the value of information cannot be overestimated. Therefore, we can take advantage of leisure time to browse news. Also, we need to learn how to select the news that is meaningful to us.
To sum up, it is essential for everyone to know about worldwide happenings even though they do not affect our lives. No matter kids or adults, those who are sensitive to what is happening around the world will occupy a vantage point in competition.

As social creatures, human beings cannot live without friends. Old friends can make an emotional reliance while some newly made friends are ingredients spicing up out lives. Thus, a heated debate has arisen about which following ability is more important: the ability to keep rapport with a small group of people or the ability to make a lot of new friends. As far as I’m concerned, the former ability overweighs the latter one. My reasons and examples are given below.
Firstly, the friendship with a small group of people is more solid and stable. In our lives, we have known a good many people for social purpose, and most of them are no more than “situational friends,” who just come and go. Taking my father for example , he is a salesman with complicated social connections, who has to show up in all kinds of social occasions, but he once told me that he could not even remember his new friends’ names. Thus, in this sense, I would rather spend time maintaining the relationship with someone I really trust.
Secondly, maintaining the friendship with a small number of people can bring long-term benefits to us. With limited time and attention, we are unlikely to keep a large circle of friends and invest emotionally in each one of them equally. On the contrary, if we take good care of a couple true friends, they will also treat us sincerely in return. For example, I have several congenial friends, who hold the same values as I do. Every time I feel confused and
disappointed about my life, their comfort and encouragement always make me full of energy.
Admittedly, I am not denying the importance of making new friends quickly. In fact, this kind of ability does have its value. For instance, when you are in troubles, new friends could probably help you out if they happened to be useful. However, in most cases, if a new friend helps you, he or she must want something back from you. It’s like a deal. Besides, the relationship with new friends is not stable, because it has not experienced the test of time.
To put it in a nutshell, the ability to maintain old friends outweighs the ability to get to know new people. As a famous quote goes, God gave us relatives, but thank God we can choose our friends. Truth be told, the quantity of friends does not matter. What really matters is the quality of friends.
7
As is known, young people have been a driving force to social progress. They are dedicating their vigor and aspiration to make the world a better place. But some people claim that in this money-oriented society, young people become less likely to invest their time and efforts in improving the world. In my opinion, it is just the other way around, and modern young people show more passion about changing the world.
Firstly, the Internet furnishes young people with information to improve the world, which helps open their minds. In the past, without Internet, young people were hardly exposed to what was happening around the world, let alone participated in the activities to change the world. Thanks to the development of Internet, young people are given a possibility to
understand what the world needs and what they can do for it. For example, an activity called “ASL ice bucket challenge” drew a worldwide attention. Numbers youngsters shared their pictures of doing the ice bucket challenge on social media, which aroused more public awareness of the disease called ALS.
Secondly, the transformation of teaching methods allows young people to think more about what they can do for the world. Teachers no longer ask their students to only focus on academic performance, but try to encourage them to think more and do more for the society. Thus, those young people are inspired to think of good ideas and carry out them to change the community. Taking my brother for example, as a beneficiary of school’s education of environmental protection, he started an activity last year to cleanse the environment by picking up cigarette ends on streets. This practice soon gained supports from his classmates as well as students from higher grades.
Admittedly, I am not denying what young people in the past did to change the society. Since it has always been human’s pursuit to build a better world, good people and good deeds were not uncommon in the past. However, decades ago, teenagers were demanded to strive for better grades at school, leaving them no changes to come up with ideas and practice them to improve the world. Plus, due to the limited ways of communication, it was hard for some activities to be organized.
From what has been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that young people today are more willing and capable to invest their time and efforts in improving the world. The more society develops, the larger number of young people will be awakened to devote to making the world a better place.

A company always has a variety of investments to make for its own development. Some are conducive to the expansion of its business while some are aimed at promoting its employees’ well-being. It is argued that employees’ work skills are central to a company’s development, which deserves the most funds. From my perspective, this assertion is biased because there are at least two other critical invest projects. I am going to elaborate both of them in the following paragraphs.
One critical investment a company can make is to enhance employees’ sense of happiness. This kind of investment is essential because whether employees are happy or not concerns their productivity and creativity. If a worker has been working with a negative mood for long, his motivation, enthusiasm and morale will gradually wear thin, which eventually harms the interests of the company. For example, I once read a piece of news that a big construction company in China filed bankruptcy, because it not only always made its employees work overtime, but also withheld salaries-those practices are like digging its own grave.
Another significant investment is to bring along talents. Undoubtedly, human is the key factor to the success or failure of an enterprise. We can see that even the best companies in the world never slack off in looking for top talents. For a company that wants to build a long-term competitiveness, one of its most important strategies is to seek the right persons. Baidu, one of the best Internet companies in China, is a good case in point. Not long ago, it heavily invested in recruiting Andrew Ng to be in charge of the company’s new project, who is the creator of “Coursera”———the world famous online learning platform.
Admittedly, I am not denying the necessity of improving employees’ work skill. As we all know, skillful workers are the premise for high productivity, which helps increase a company’s profit margin. Nevertheless, the assertion that to improve the work skills of employees is the most important investment seems too arbitrary and unilateral, for other kinds of crucial types of investment, which can also play a key role in the development of a company, are ignored.
In a word, to improve employees’ work skills is important, but it is not the most important investment. It is because a series of investment projects are equally important to the development of a company, including enhancing employees’ sense of happiness and introducing excellent talents as mentioned above.

In this highly competitive society, it is difficult for individuals to succeed without cooperation with others. Learning to get along with colleagues, including how to deal with criticism from others, has become a necessity for every worker. This phenomenon triggers an interesting discussion: does the ability to accept criticism have anything to do with career success? As for me, people not good at taking criticism from others are unlikely to be successful. My reasons and examples are given below.
Firstly, one’s refusal to accept criticism will make a negative mark in people’s minds, isolating himself in a group. It is because people tend to prefer those who are modest and willing to admit mistakes and correct them. That is to say, a stubborn person who refuses to improve himself will gradually lose assistance and support from his colleagues. My friend Ben
is a good case in point. He has changed jobs frequently and found it hard to settle down. Having known him for long, I can tell the reason why: he always has a backlash against criticism from others, and thus no one feels good to work with him.
In addition, criticism from others can stop one from going in the wrong direction. As a proverb goes, outsiders see most of the game, which means one cannot realize his or her own problems that are obvious to others. If we are criticized, it is a good opportunity for us to get rid of the shortcomings and become better persons. In contrast, escaping from criticism blindly makes things even worse. Let’s imagine a dictatorial boss, who cracks down on different voices everywhere inside his company. He wants to manage the company all by his way, but this method will definitely accelerate its collapse.
Admittedly, I am not denying the advantage of sticking to oneself and refusing to take criticism. For instance, one can fully carry out what he believes without being influenced by others. However, the person who always ignores others’ criticism plays a negative role in building an effective team as well as a harmonious work environment. So sometimes we just need to sacrifice personal benefits for collective interests.
To recap, refusal to take criticism can put one in a tough spot at work. According to Chairman Mao, the builder of PRC, “Modesty makes people progress while proud makes people lag behind.” Accepting criticism from others is an expression of being modest, which is an important quality to help one achieve an incredible success with career.

With the progress of science and technology, various technological devices keep emerging one after another, and meanwhile, the same type of product evolves with faster speed of iteration. This trend divides people into two kinds: the first kind is apt to purchase what comes out immediately whereas the other kind waits till the product is widely used. Personally speaking, I belong to the latter kind of people who are conservative when purchasing things. There are a couple of reasons and examples that support my viewpoint.
Firstly, it is wise to buy a device later when its deficiencies get fixed. It is because when a new technological device is available to the public for the first time, there may be several unnoticed imperfections about it. With the growing number of users reporting the problems to the manufacturers, the following versions are bound to surpass the original ones in terms of quality. Taking iPhone 4 for example. This product suffered sharp criticism over signal-receiving problems caused by its ill-designed antenna. After rounds of optimizations, the later versions of iPhone 4 became stable in function and earned its worldwide reputation gradually.
Secondly, the price of a newly launched technological device often comes with bubbles, which means the quality-price ratio is not satisfactory at the very beginning. According to the law of supply and demand, when a popular device is firstly brought to the market, the supply falls short of demand, which will result in a higher price than its real value, but after a period of time, the price will return to a reasonable level. For example, the initial price for Surface, a product by Microsoft, was set at around $600, which was somewhat unaffordable to ordinary consumers. Three months later, the price was cut down to $300 which was a good price.
It is true that one who buys a technological device as soon as it comes out can enjoy the
latest technology earlier than the rest of us. However, if he chooses to buy it after an amount of time, his experience will be better because lots of deficiencies will be fixed. Besides, since modern technological devices are iterating rapidly, always buying a new device is no different to wasting money.
In short , I prefer to buy a technological device after it is widely used. As an old saying goes, good things are worth waiting. Facing a new fascinating technological device, it would be better for us to wait until the price comes down and the quality becomes better.

In oriental countries, a child’s achievement is traditionally believed to link to a family’s glory. The idea that “spare a rod, spoil a child” runs inside a family from generation to generation. Thus, an interesting discussion has arisen: Are strict rules a necessity to help children to be successful? As far as I am concerned, strict rules could be counterproductive when being employed by parents to educate their children. My viewpoint is based on following reasons and examples.
Firstly, strict rules weaken children’s creativity and imagination. In this fast-changing society, the ability to try something new and do away with old routines is more important than ever before. Unfortunately, many parents use strict rules to confine children’s behaviors and thoughts to a cramped space. They tell their kids what should be done and what shouldn’t, depriving them of the freedom to set their minds free. A good case in point is that most of the leading innovative companies were born in open and free countries such as US, rather than in countries where strict rules are dominant ways of education.
Secondly, strict rules are disadvantageous to the cultivation of communicative ability, which is one of the most important qualities a successful person must have. Good communicative skills help us not only secure our principles, but also gain more benefits. Nevertheless, strict rules make people obedient and afraid of fighting for their own interests. A child raised in a family full of strict rules tends to make compromises and blindly follow the footsteps of others. Taking my cousin for example, having been affected by strict rules for long, he has lost the courage to argue with others, always putting himself in the inferior position of a negotiation.
Admittedly, I am not saying that strict rules are good for nothing. They do have their values in the development of kids. For instance, the personality of children nurtured by strict parents tends to be steady and modest, which allows them to lead a secure life in the future. However, if viewed from another angle, that “vantage point” of strict rules is actually plausible, because children’s character is likely to be rounded off, which makes them obedient and mediocre.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw a conclusion that parents should abandon the use of strict rules to educate their kids. On one hand, the strict rules put a limit on children’s creativity and imagination. On the other hand, they wear down the children’s bravery to express different ideas and flight for their own interests.

At present, in the wake of intense competition in workplace, people are exposed to a great deal of pressure. In order to relax, they tend to take approaches such as watching
movies, reading books or doing physical exercises. Some people claim that it is not wise to do physical exercises when stressing out. However, from my point of view, physical exercises are exactly what a stressful person needs. My viewpoint is based on the following reasons and examples.
The first benefit that doing physical exercise can bring is that during the exercises, people’s mind is set at ease. Mental relaxation is something that modern people particularly require in such a competitive world. Physical exercises unwind us by shifting our concentration from work to breathing or muscle building. Nevertheless, watching movies and reading books, in most cases, yield a counterproductive result, for our minds are still running especially in the middle of nerve-racking thrillers or fictions. Taking myself for example, my tiredness as a result of a full day’s work will be gone after finishing 1 kilometer’s jogging on the treadmill without thinking about work.
In addition, physical exercises are conducive to people’s physical condition, which intensifies their resistance against fatigue. Although a person may feel exhausted physically after doing some sports, his or her cardiovascular system is enhanced during the exercises, and the blood circulation would become more efficient. In contrast, watching movies and reading books make people inactive, thus causing serious physical problems. For example, my uncle is a software engineer. His job is nothing but writing code in front of computers all year round. Instead of doing any sports, he tends to watch movies and eat snack to relax. As a result, obesity and high blood pressure have come along.
Admittedly, I do not mean that watching movies and reading books play no role in helping people relax. After all, our bodies are at rest while watching movies or reading books.
However, compared to doing exercises, sitting there watching or reading is to a large extent detrimental to our physical health because the state of inactivity would weaken out ability to get rid of stress. In addition, the excessive use of eyes could undoubtedly bring harms to our sight
To put it in a nutshell, doing exercises is more advantageous than watching movies or reading books in helping people relax. It is because exercises not only provide a perfect opportunity to relax our minds, but also enable people to stand up to pressure of work.

Sports are loved all across the world. Some of them even spend a large amount of time watching sports on TV and collecting all kinds of information about their favorite sports teams. This phenomenon gives rise to a grave concern about whether excessive focus on sports could bring a bad effect on life. As far as I am concerned, spending too much time on sports undoubtedly screws up one’s life. I am going to elaborate this point in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, the addiction to sports is detrimental to family harmony. It is because family is supposed to be a place where members care about each other by listening, talking and offering help, but the obsession with sports would definitely deprive people of the “quality time” that belongs to all family members. Imagine such a scene: a wife wants to ask advice about changing jobs from her husband, but the husband seems like different and aloof. Later the wife finds out that her husband has his mind stuffed with football matches, leaving no room for listening to his wife’s inner voice.
Secondly, physical condition would be negatively affected by excessive attention to sports on TV as well as to sports teams. Fascination with something often comes at a cost. People go after sports stars and sports events at the sacrifice of losing opportunities to rest or exercise. For example, I have a neighbor who is a maniac football fan. During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he stayed up every night to watch the games because of the time difference. Inadequate sleep and great pressure of work undermined his health and he developed serious problems with his heart.
On the other hand, there are indeed some benefits that watching sports and following favorite teams can bring to people. For instance, in social occasions, sports can make an ideal topic among new friends. Having a knowledge of sports is helpful for interpersonal communication. However, if we fail to manage our time and let our mania encroach the time to work, exercise and communicate with family, undesirable consequences would occur.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw a conclusion that too much time on watching sports programs and following sports teams do have bad influence on our life. As an old saying goes, things would turn for the worse if they go extreme. Having a hobby is a good thing, but if we do not juggle it with our life, it would become an obstacle.
