The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping (扫墓) Day in English, is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on April 4th this year. It is a time for Chinese people to remember and honor (向……表示敬意) the dead by visiting their tombs and making offering.

Traditionally, people show their feelings by burning spirit money (纸钱). However, in order to protect the environment, some cities think of new ways to make the festival greener.

Before Tomb Sweeping Day, Harbin city gave the notice about stopping the production (生产) and sale of spirit money. When people visited tombs, they offered flowers, the wind-bells or food instead of spirit money.

The people in Harbin can also join in online memorial activities, such as giving flowers, lighting candles (蜡烛) and writing articles to remember the dead family members and friends.

During Tomb Sweeping Day, Hainan Province began an activity to exchange visitors' spirit money for flowers.

In Haikou and Sanya, many people helped tomb sweepers bring fresh flowers and took away their spirit money. \"It is a good, environment-friendly and green idea. I will try it this time,\" said a tomb visitor, Mr. Zhang, in Sanya.

People like these ideas because they cannot both honor the dead and save the environment.

In my opinion, teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world. You educate the leaders of tomorrow, scientists of tomorrow, artists of tomorrow and so on. You are likely one of the most important adults (成人)in your students' lives.

Any parent will tell you that their child is their most precious (宝贵的)gift. In one year, when I am sending my daughter on her first day of school, I will trust her teacher that she will return safely. Knowing that her teacher is an adult she can trust, who cares about her and who makes her excited to learn and return to school the next day. So I prepare to send my child out into the big world where she will meet new children and teachers, ready to learn and explore this big world.

However, before she becomes a real student, I'd like to share with you what I hope for her teachers.

Develop strong relationships with your students. Really get to know them and show an interest in them, their friends and their family life.

Know your students. Learn about their dreams and encourage them. Find out your students' strengths (长处)and offer chances to use them and feel that joy of doing something they both like and are good at.

Get to know your students' parents. Share with us how you prepare your students and how we can help them deal with a sometimes scary world. Those things are what draws your students to you and what gives parents comfort that their children are having a good experience at school. For many, especially the youngest, your role in your students' lives may be similar to that of a parent. Thank you for educating, loving, supporting, encouraging,

Cold weather during winter months may stop many people from leaving home and running in the open air. But a new study shows that the drop (下降) in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, doctors say, running in cold weather helps improve one's performance.

______ Two reasons are the low temperatures and strong winds. But many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures make less pressure on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate (心率) is lower than in warmer weather.

Besides, the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This result comes from John Brewer, a sports scientist at St. Mary's University in London. He explains that one way to lose heat is by sweating (出汗), and that the body loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin (皮肤). But sweating puts much pressure on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it much harder to lose heat when the outside

试卷第7页,共12页

environment is also warm.

What's more, running in higher temperatures make heart rates faster. Scientists find that heart rates are about 6 percent higher in the hotter conditions. However, running in cooler temperature has some advantages. One is that the body does not have to work so hard to move blood to the skin surface in cooler temperatures, which means running needs less energy.

So the most important thing for people who run in cold weather is to wear the right clothes. And especially, keeping as dry as possible is very important when exercising in low temperatures.

Everyone wants to write beautifully. And I love something special — Chinese calligraphy (书法).

When I was a little child, I loved to watch my grandparents write Chinese characters (汉字) with ink brushes (毛笔). Later I came to learn about many Chinese calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi of the Jin Dynasty.

At the age of 9, I joined a writing class to learn Chinese calligraphy. The teacher showed many of his calligraphy works. I told myself that I would practice hard and try to become as good as him.

At first, I followed the teacher carefully. As soon as the teacher wrote a character, I wrote the same one. Before long I could write many difficult characters. I was happy and believed that I was talented at Chinese calligraphy.

However, after a year of learning, although I practiced hard, the teacher pointed out some problems in my calligraphy. I thought it was just a way to improve my writing skills, but he told that Chinese calligraphy is part of Chinese culture. Besides, I thought it was just about mimicry (模仿), but he told me that Chinese calligraphy is a creation that comes from the heart. He said that writer should think carefully about what he wants to show before writing.

I'm not sure if I fully understood the teacher. But from then on I spent a lot of time thinking and practicing my writing. I will go on practicing and I hope one day I can know the essence (精华) of Chinese calligraphy.
