When was the last time you lost something? What was it?

According to a recent survey, we spend about ten minutes a day looking for lost things. Over an average lifetime, this adds up to an incredible 3,680 hours (or 153 days). Is there anything we can do about it?

The study of 3,000 adults was carried out by home insurance company Esure. They found that mobile phones and car keys were the most frequently lost items. Other things on the list included: house keys, bills, sunglasses, wallets, bank cards, watches, jewellery (particularly rings and earrings).

So, what’s going on? “Most blame it on a busy lifestyle,” says Nikki Sellers, the head of Esure. Others say it’s the fault of spouses (配偶) or children for not putting things back where they belong. A few admitted to untidiness, absent-mindedness and a poor memory, with some wishing they were more organized.

What’s the solution? “You need to choose a particular place for something and always put it back there,” said Nikki Sellers. “And you need to make sure everyone else in the house knows where to put it back too. You also need to keep your house tidy, label boxes clearly and find a place near the front door for all the items that you need in the morning. A good idea would be to have a shelf there with a bowl for your keys, purse, wallet and anything else.” she added.

If you are still having trouble finding things, don’t worry — things could be a lot worse: fourteen people in the survey said they spent over an hour every day looking for lost items. Surely you can’t be as bad as that!

21. According to the survey, which do people lose most frequently? A. House keys.

B. Cell phones.

C. Bank cards.

D. Sunglasses.

22. The majority of people surveyed think that they lose something because of _______. A. the fault of their family members C. lack of organization

23. From the text we learn that ________.

A. many people in the survey spend over an hour looking for the lost items B. a shelf near the front door is a must if you are to avoid losing money C. the author is quite worried about those who have trouble finding things

- 3 -

B. their bad memory

D. their busy life

D. Nikki Sellers suggests always putting things back where they were

A woman from Japan was telling a friend about her trip to the United States. The woman had visited major businesses and investment companies in New York City and Chicago.

“I studied English before I left home,” she said. “But I still was not sure that people were speaking English.”

Her problem is easy to understand. Americans in business are like people who are in business anywhere. They have a language of their own. Some of the words and expressions deal with the special areas of their work. Other expressions are borrowed from different kinds of work such as the theater and movie industry.

One such saying is “get your act together”. When things go wrong in a business, an employer may get angry. He may shout, “Stop making mistakes. Get your act together.” Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, “Let us get our act together.” Either way, the meaning is the same. Getting your act together is getting organized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan of action.

It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But, it is probable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps the other day when one actor was nervous and made a lot of mistakes, the director may have said, “Calm down, now. Get your act together.” Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s. Mr. Rogers says the Manchester Guardian newspaper used it in 1978. The newspaper said a reform policy required that the British

government get its act together. Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a company meet. One company even called its yearly report, “Getting Our Act Together.”

The Japanese visitor was confused by another expression used by American business people. It is “cut to the chase”. She heard that expression when she attended an important meeting of one company. One official was giving a very long and boring report, and finally, the president of the company interrupted and said, “Cut to the chase.” Cut to the chase means to stop spending so much time on details or unimportant materials. Hurry and get to the point. And naturally, this saying was started by people who make movies. Next time, if your employer tells you to cut to the chase, be sure to get to the main point of your story quickly. 24. After the woman visited the United States she might feel that .

- 4 -

A. her English was poorer than she had expected B. it was great fun to learn English and its culture C. American employers were sometimes rude D. it was difficult to do business with Americans

25. In which situation could the words “get your act together” be used? A. You’ve won a job opportunity in a law firm. B. Players perform badly in a match and seem to lose. C. Visitors make a tiresome and unpleasant trip to someplace. D. Audience is satisfied with the actor’s performance in a movie.

26. What do the sayings “get your act together” and “cut to the chase” have in common? A. Their use.

B. Their meaning. C. Their origin.

D. Their popularity.

27. The text is most likely to be found in a book about _______. A. life attitude

B. travel and culture

C. language and culture

D. business management

C

Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.

Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.

Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip -- a little chip of silicon crystal. It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store more than a million “bits” of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way.

- 5 -

Machines will do everything for us. They will even talk and play games with us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?

Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?

28. From paragraph 1, we can know __________.

A. why early human beings cut skin from dead animals B. how early human beings discovered the tools C. what early human beings used the tools for D. what food early human beings stored

29. The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it ______. A. was very important to the development of mankind B. led to the invention of machines in the early time C. developed cooking abilities of mankind D. was one of the first tools of mankind

30. The silicon chip is mentioned in the passage to A. show the changes of tools

B. introduce a new kind of tool

C. give an example of using tools D. compare the effects of two kinds of tools 31. At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is _________. A. Out of order full of meanings

D

A new study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family claims that all the time you spend parenting just doesn’t matter. But it’s a claim that, despite the enthusiastic and widespread coverage by the media, does not hold water.

The research suggests that child outcomes (including behavior problems, emotional problems, and academic performance) are barely (几乎没有) connected with the time that parents spend with their children. The researchers examined the time diaries of 1,600 children, looking at parenting

B. hard to predict

C. Less colorful D.

- 6 -

time and outcomes when the kids were aged 3 to 11 in 1997, and again in 2002, when they were between 8 and 16. (A time diary is a detailed report of all activities you carry out in a day.)

This research largely reflects the failure of the authors to correctly measure parental input (投入). It just looked at time diaries from two particular days — one a weekday and the other a weekend day.

Trying to get a sense of the time you spend parenting from a single day’s diary is a bit like trying to measure your income from a single day. If yesterday was payday, you looked rich, but if it’s not, you would be reported as poor. You get a clearer picture only by looking at your income — or your parenting time — over a more meaningful period.

What you did yesterday should not be taken as representative of what you did last year. This is why most high-quality studies of parenting time focus instead on how often parents read to their children, play with them or help them with homework over a period of month or longer — long enough to represent their different approaches to parenting.

As an exhausted parent who doesn’t get enough time to work out, and who hasn’t seen a movie for months, I understand why so many of us might seize on studies suggesting that we should take more time for ourselves. Perhaps we should. But I agree with Ariel Kalil, a development psychologist, on the suggestion “that when parents spend high-quality time with their children, their children are more likely to succeed.”

32. The underlined words “hold water” in the first paragraph probably mean ________. A. to be surprising B. to be reasonable usual

33. The study was conducted to explore the link between _______.

A. parenting time and child outcomes B. time diaries and child development C. children’s habits and parents’ influence children’s problems

34. How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed? A. By giving descriptions C. By making a comparison

B. By analyzing the cause D.

activities

C. to be confusing D. to be

D. By offering research findings

35. The author may agree that high-quality studies of parenting time should _______. A. be completed in one month

How To Break 5 Bad Financial Habits

Everyone has a bad financial habit. We live in a country that spends billions on advertising to make us want to make purchases; 36 . Remember: even though the habits are hard to break and require great effort, there is payoff.

1. Pay bills when you receive them. Think of all the stress and anxiety that you experience when you put off paying your bills. When you receive the email notice or open the bill in the mail, take care of it. It will only take five minutes, and you won't be flooded with bills at the last minute.

2. 37 . You must have had a hard time controlling the amount of purchases you are making. Minimize this urge by using your ATM card once a week to withdraw the amount of money for the week. Keep your cards at home, and even put your credit cards in a hard to reach place in your closet to keep you from using them.

3. Buy only what you really need. Most of us take shopping trips to buy items we really don't really need. Some claim shopping eases their tension, gets their mind off other things, or gives them much happiness. 38 . Try to replace shopping with some hobbies like riding your bike or taking a walk with friends.

4. Track your expenses. Sometimes restaurants and businesses will charge you the wrong amount, but you won't have the receipt to back up your claim. Other times, you might have inadequate funds for the check you just wrote. Keep your receipts, and spend a few minutes every night to double check your charges, and know the current balance of your bank account. 39 .

5. Check your credit score annually. 40 . If you do notice something wrong, you can send in correction letters, so your applications for credit cards, car loans, or a mortgage(房屋贷款) are approved.

A. Take the time to figure out what makes you buy unnecessary items. B. Change how you spend your money.

C. It beats getting overcharged or having to pay an overdraft(透支) fee.

D. So if you’re the reason your money never seems to stick around, here are some strategies to help break five bad financial habits.

- 8 -

E. Use cash and not your card.

F. Get in the habit of checking your credit score to make sure there are no errors or inaccuracies. G. However, if you are looking to make change and break your bad financial habits, use these tips.

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in Yichang. Now, I’d like to tell you something about it.

For one thing, you may have some trouble with the application problem you are well prepared for. You may find it difficult to communicate with the local people, because many of them have a strong accent. For another, you may not get used to the Chinese food here. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning. On the other hand, you are expected to pay more attention to the difference between the Western and Chinese cultures and adapt to the cold and changeable weather.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Whenever you are in trouble, don’t hesitate to ask me for help.

Best wishes!

Yours, Li Hua
