“Soon, you’re going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known i: exactly; tab-stops: 105.0pt 1.0pt 273.0pn my neighborhood.

One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1. 25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.

Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’t be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. bushes must be pruned(剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available(可用的) in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake.

Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing(施肥) have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick leaves.

Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold; First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw(缩回) my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light.

Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to

several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, I’ll think about th painful at tomorrow.

21. What are the requirements for the healthy growth of roses? A. A lot of care and the right soil. B. Frequent pruning and fertilizing. C. Tomato plants grown alongside. D. Cages placed around the roots. 22. This year the writer’s roses were ______. A. removed from the rose bed B. picked along with the tomatoes C. mostly damaged by too much sunlight D. largely hidden under the tomato plant

23. By saying “the prize so dearly won” in paragraph 5, the writer wants to ______. A. show the difficulty in picking the tomatoes B. show the hardship of growing the roses C. express her liking for the roses D. express her care for the tomatoes

24 In the situation described in the text, one good thing is that ______. A. the roses cost the writer little money B. the writer has a daily harvest of tomatoes C. someone will help the writer make the decision D. the writer can now enjoy both the roses and tomatoes

A food additive is any substance that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of“chemicals in food.”The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances like milk, as well as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas. Some chemical substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.

The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients are to be avoided. But many

natural chemicals, found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratory-made substances increase the nutritional value of food. Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange. Like“chemical”,“man-made”doesn’t necessarily mean“not fit to eat”. Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize, thicken, harden, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products. Additives can make food more convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing the sales and profits of the producers.

Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and have been taken off the market. Many people feel there’s a risk of eating food to which anything has been added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives are subjected to strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing serious side effects from the long-term use of presently approved food additives are very slim. 25 From the passage we can learn that . A. all foods consist of chemical substances B. it is right to reject chemicals in food C. food additives are harmful to our health

D. natural foods are much safer than man-made ones 26. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Foods with more additives have higher nutritional value. B. To ensure food safety, the FDA will ban food additives. C. Foods free of additives can keep a much longer shelf life. D. Food additives can improve the quality of foods in many ways.

27.We can infer from the regulation to the food additives by the FDA that . A. new additives will be approved more easily than before B. food producers won’t be allowed to use new food additives C. food with common-used additives will be taken off the market

D. food additives will be used in a safer and more scientific way 28. According to the writer, the food additive is .

A. worrying B. acceptable C. poisonous D. avoidable

Our eyes may be playing tricks on us. New research shows that sometimes people physically see what they want to see. Cornell University social psychologist (心理学家) David Dunning carried out experiments to test whether wishful thinking can actually affect what we see. “It’s well proved from what is experienced in everyday life, and from the laboratory as well, that people think what they want to think,” he says. “We’re taking this a step further. We're asking if strong wishes and fears can actually affect what people physically see.” Dunning and his assistants told volunteers that a computer game would show them either a letter or number to decide whether they would drink orange juice or fruit syrup (果子露). As they wrote in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the computer would flash an

ambiguous picture, which could be seen as the letter “B” or the number “13”. Volunteers who were told that a letter would get them orange juice most often reported seeing “B”. Those who were told that a number would get them orange juice most often saw “13”. The researchers also used a hidden camera to track volunteers’ eye movements, particularly the first eye movement. “We don't control them,” Dunning says, “and they don't even know that we are watching them, so it honestly shows what a person is seeing.” “This research suggests that the brain is doing a lot of work between the eye and the conscious awareness to affect what we think,” Dunning concludes(得出结论). “Before we even see the world, our brain has decided to keep what we want to see and avoid what we don't want to see.” 29. The passage is mainly about _____________. A. the eye movements of some volunteers

B. an experiment by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology C. a social psychologist Dunning and his assistants D. new findings on what may affect what we see

30. In Dunning's experiment, if “13” gets you orange juice, which of the following will also get you orange juice?

A. B. C. D. 31. The underlined word “ambiguous” most probably means _____________. A. interesting B. unclear C. important D. old 32. Which of the following statements is true according to Dunning's findings?

A. The brain can influence people's vision. B. The brain forgets what it wants to see. C. The eyes can't see without strong wishes and fears. D. The brain is not actually connected to the eyes 第二节

Relax during a job interview

Few people actually like job interviewing. It’s nerve-wracking(摧残神经的) trying to show your “best” self to a perfect stranger. 33 That’s not easy. But there are some ways to pull yourself together and feel more confident.

Prepare solid talking points. It’s always best to over-prepare for possible questions by not only researching the company and the person interviewing you, but also by preparing answers and practicing those responses. Review the skills and experiences requested in the job announcement and have two to three examples how you have demonstrated each one. 34 Remember: It’s a two-way street. This is conversation, not an interrogation(审问). 35 Remembering that this is a back and forth discussion, where you can and should ask questions as well as answer them, can help you feel more comfortable.

Just breathe. 36 Your body will relax lot. You want to avoid upper chest breathing, as it tends to just move you, stress upward to your face.

37 if you go into an interview picking apart your outfit or imperfect responses, you're only hurting your chances of coming off as calm and collected. Turn off your negative self-talk and then create a different self-talk message, like, “I am here to share the best of my ability and that is all I can really do.”

Work it out. Putting in some gym time the morning of your interview can help you get rid of any nervous tension. Exercise helps calm your nervous system and tends to reduce the intensity of physical manifestations(表现形式)of stress such as restlessness. A. Stop the negative thoughts. B. Put your idea into practice.

C. When faced with an interviewer, you may be nervous. D. Before you walk into your interview, take a few deep breaths.

E. You’re trying to prove you’re the one for the job and that you can handle stressful situations. F. Don’t forget that you’re not the only one being interviewed – you’re also interviewing the organization.

G. This will strengthen your answers and allow you to show how your experience is relevant to the job or organization for which you’re interviewing.
