1. If you come to London for the first time now, you,ll see a lot of buses and cars on the road, you,ll also see a lot of bikes because now more and more people travel by bike.
There are a lot of reasons for this. First, it,s very cheap to use a bike, and it,s quick too. You often wait for a bus for half an hour. When the bus comes, there are so many other buses and cars on the road that the bus moves very slowly. The underground train is quick but very expensive and often crowded.
I traveled to work by bus for about four years. I often arrived at work late and tired. Then one day, about two years ago, a friend said,“I go to work by bike, why don,t we travel together?”
“Because my bike is old,”I answered,“and there are so many buses and cars on the road. I always feel afraid”
“You needn,t worry about this,” said my friend.“If you follow me and we ride slowly, you,ll be fine.”
Although we went slowly, we arrived at work quickly. The bus ride took forty minutes and the bike ride took half an hour!
2.An eleven-year-old boy in a small town wanted to be a train driver. But the
boy was born without hands. His father taught him to use his feet as hands. He couldn,t go to school, so he spent all his time watching trains coming and going because he lived near the station. How he wanted to be a train driver!
One day he saw an empty train and climbed in. It was not easy for him to start it with his feet. Soon the train was traveling at forty miles(英里) an hour. The railway workers()could not see the boy in the train and tried to stop the train. The train reached a small station and then the boy drove it on. When he was near the town, a worker caught up with the train and stopped it. At first he was very angry, but he laughed when the boy said, “I like trains”.
“Well, I,m glad you don,t like planes!”
3.If someone asks me:“Do you like music?” I,m sure I will answer him or her:“Of course, I do.”Because I think music is an important part of our lives. Different people have different ideas about music. For me, I like rock music because it ,s so exciting. And my favorite rock band, the “Foxy Ladies”(酷妹)is one of the most famous rock bands in the world. I also like pop music. My classmate Li Lan loves dance music, because she enjoys dancing. My best friend, Jane, likes jazz music(爵士乐).She thinks jazz is really cool. But my mother thinks rock is boring. She likes relaxing music. That,s why she likes country music, I think.
4. Once a little boy wanted to meet Love. He knew it was a long trip to where Love lived, so he got his things ready with some pizzas and drinks and started off. When he passed three streets, he saw an old woman sitting in the park and
watching some birds. She looked very hungry. The boy gave her a pizza. She took it and smiled at him. The smile was so beautiful .The boy was very happy.
When the boy opened the door of his house, his mother was surprised by the look of joy(快乐)on his face and asked what had made him so happy. “I gave a pizza to Love. She has got the most beautiful smile in the world.” At the same time, the old woman,s son was also surprised at his mother,s pleasure and asked why.
“I gave a pizza in the park with Love,” she said, “and he is much younger than I expected.”
If the world is full of love, we can enjoy a better life.
5. One day Jack’s wife was cleaning out their house.
“Look at all these umbrellas,” she said to Jack. “There are eight and they are all broken.”
“I’ll take them to the umbrella shop and have them mended,” Jack said.
Jack took the eight umbrellas to the shop and left them there. “They’ll be ready tomorrow,” the shopkeeper said.
That evening Jack went home from the office by bus as usual. He sat next to an old woman. She had an umbrella on the floor near her.
When the bus reached his stop, he picked up her umbrella and stood up. “Hey!” the woman said. “That’s my umbrella!”
“I’m sorry,” Jack said, and at the same time he gave the umbrella to her. “I wasn’t thinking. Please excuse me.”
The next day he got back the umbrellas from the umbrella shop and got on the bus.
As he sat down, a voice behind him said, “You certainly have a successful day!”
He turned around and saw the woman whose umbrella had almost been taken by him the day before.
6. Jill lived with her grandma. The old woman was strong enough that she could do everything herself at home.
As soon as Jill began to tidy the rooms or wash something, her grandma stopped her and told her to work hard at her lessons. Jill had to listen to her grandma and spent all her time on her study. So she went to college at last.
Now the girl has left college. She did well in all her subjects and easily found work in Mr Brown’s company. She was sure Mr Brown would put her in an important position(位置).
On the first day the boss gave her a broom and said, “Your first work is to sweep the offices.”
“What?” the girl called out in surprise,“I’m a college student, you know.”
“I’m sorry I don’t know that. Here, give me the broom and let me show you!”
7.Students learn their lessons in class.In class teachers teach them.Students sit in the classroom listening to the teacher.Thise is a way of learning.Is this the only way for students to learn something? Of course not.There is another way to learn.That is students can teach themselves.For example,if you cannot remember something when you are doing your homework,you can look at your book to find the anwer.This is a way to teach yourself.And it is not a difficult thing.We can do this at any place and at any time.
How do you teach yourself?The first thing you must do is reading.Read something you are interested in .The second is that you must ask yourself questions.The question is something you don’t understand,or you want to know more about.The third is to answer the question yourself by thinking hard.This is the a way of teaching yourself.And you must do this all by yourself.If you keep doing like this for a long time,you are sure to succeed in your study.
