In the 1800s, a silver-like metal (金属) called aluminium (铝) was so strange that most people had never heard of that.French emperor Napoleon III served his extra-special guests on aluminium bowls. Less important visitors had to use gold.
In fact, aluminium is the most common metal in rocks. But it's never found in pure(纯净的)* form. That means you'll never meet aluminium just like the way a lucky. Gold digger find
gold. For a long time, no one knew how to get it out of rocks.
Aluminium really, really likes oxygen. Aluminium and oxygen will stick together even at a very high temperature. In the 1700s, scientists tried heating the rock with aluminium to different temperatures. They dissolved(溶解)* it, but they all failed to get the metal. Finally,in 1825 they managed to get a little metal-rich thing. It took another 20 years to get a little piece of pure aluminium. For a while, it was more expensive than gold.
In 1884,an American named Charles Hall happened to know that if someone could invent a cheaper way to get pure aluminium, he would change the world and get rich. Hall decided to be that person. Hall's way was to dissolve aluminium and use lots of electricity to knock oxygen and aluminium atoms* (原子)apart. Finally, pure aluminium goes down to the bottom. At the same time,in France, chemist Paul Héroult had exactly the same idea' They shared prizes for the discovery. The Hall-Héroult Process is still widely used today.
Soon there was cheap aluminium for all. Unlike gold, designers loved aluminium since it is light and strong. Today, aluminium is all around us, in cars, planes, buildings, computers, cans, and much more.
_______Making old aluminium soft uses 90% less energy than making new aluminium. It's much easier, cheaper and creates less pollution. In fact, 75% of all aluminium ever produced can still be found in our daily life! So the next time you see an old soda can, don't think of it as rubbish. Think of it as one of Earth's most valuable metals, even if it doesn't cost as much as gold.Just pick it up.
8. The new way in Charles Hall's experiment was to ________ .
A. dissolve the aluminium B. keep aluminium at a high temperature C. make aluminium heavier to go down D.use electricity to make atoms separate 9. Which one is TRUE according to the passage? A. It's easy to break aluminium products. B. People had got pure aluminium before Hall. C. Paul Iléroult was one of Charles Hall's friends. D We have already used 75% of world's aluminium.
10 Which of the following can be put in the _______of the last paragraph?
A. Aluminium is easy to collect and reuse. B. Getting old aluminium needs energy. C. We had enough aluminium for daily use. D. Aluminium is good for our environment. 11.The best title of the passage can be________.
A. The Importance of Aluminium B.Is It More Valuable than Gold?
C. The Best Way to Get Aluminium D. Aluminium: A Great Metal in the History
