Saving Private Ryan(1998)
A review by Jenny Carter, aged 15 Saving Private Ryan is a film which was directed by Steven Spielberg. The two main characters are Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, and Private James Ryan, played by Matt Damon. James Ryan is the fourth brother to be involved in the Second World War. His three brothers has already been killed, two of them in the D-Day landing
in Normandy, the other in a battle in another part of the world. Their heart-broken mother receives the news about all her dead sons on the same day. Small talk is a very short conversation used by individual to kill time and make the other person feel comfortable in his presence. However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics.
There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss. The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know each other well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic.
If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture.
There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk. Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well. Compliments on clothing or hair are acceptable: however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person’s body. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable: You don’t talk about private issues either, because you don’t know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information.
Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person doesn’t seem comfortable with or interested it.
24.What is small talk according to the passage?
A. A talk with the others. B. A argument with the others. C. A long talk with the others.
D. A very short conversation and make the others feel comfortable. 25. Which topics are not considered acceptable while making small talk?
A. The weather. B. Sports news. C. Private issues. D. Films. 26. What do you think of talking about an issue which the others feel comfortable with or interested in?
4 / 11
A. It’s unwise. B. It’s interesting. C. It’s boring. D. It’s funny. 27. When you are at the bus stop and want to start a small talk, what would not you say?
A. What do you think of TV program last night?
B. I think the football match held in Qingdao was very wonderful. How about you? C. How much does your father earn every month?
D. It’s fine today. What do your think the weather will be like tomorrow?

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored(修复) the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

Choosing the Right Resolution (决定)
Millions of Americans began 2014 with the same resolution(决心) they started 2013 with, a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake.
To reach our goal of losing weight --- the output, we need to control what we eat --- the input ( 输入). That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “I’ll stop having abandon for lunch,” or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome. Recently a new science behind incentives (激励) , including in education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increased achievement when based on input but had no effect on output. Fryer’s conclusion was that the intensives for inputs might be more effective because do not know how to do better on exam, besides general rules like “study harder.” Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a well-set task over which they have much more control.
As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a much higher chance of success. And it’s easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.
If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your family, don’t stop with this general wish. Think bout an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday.
6 / 11
In the long run(长远,终究), these new goals could become a habit.
32. The writer thinks that setting losing weight as a goal is a mistake because _______ . A. it is based on his study B. it is dependent on others
C. it is focused too much on the result D. it is hard to achieve for most Americans 33. In Roland Fryer’s research, some students did better than the others because ______ . A. they were rewarded(回报) because of reading some books B. they were motivated by their teachers C. they paid more attention to exams D. they obeyed all the general rules
34. The writer strongly believes that we should ________ . A. develop good habits and focus on the outcome(结果)
B. be optimistic about(对…..感到乐观) final goals and stick to them C. pick specific actions that can be turned into(转化为) good habits D. set ambitious(雄心勃勃的)goals that can balance the input an output 35. According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal? A. “I’ll give up desert.”
B. “I’ll study until I become old.”
D. “I’ll spend more time swimming”
C. “I’ll cut down my expense(消费 开支)”
