Some people believe that the range of technologies available to individuals will increase the gap between the rich and the poor. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
【In today’s world, the gap between the rich and the poor has an increasing trend. Some people believe that technology available to individuals is the cause of it. And to some degree, I also agree with this idea.】
【Today, the phenomenon that the gap between the poor and the rich is widening has captured wide concern. Some people hold the belief that it is the technology available that leads to the inequality of economic status. I think this view is to some degree oversimplified. /I hold conservative attitude toward this view. / I think, it is superficial that technology is the culprit of the social imbalance. 】
Question: whether the development of technologies can widen income gap?
Technological progress has imposed a higher standard for education because many jobs only need people with qualifications or relevant working skills. Unfortunately, people from regions without adequate education resources find it hard to learn new technologies, thus unable to engage in hi-tech work. In this knowledge-driven society, possibilities of high payment are very rare for those less educated. By contrast, qualified people can find hi-tech work with decent pay. In this sense, we may suggest that technology is one of the contributing factors to the widening of income gap.
However, facts show that the development of technologies has enhanced working efficiency. Thus more social fortune is created in shorter time period, which will be distributed to people. Objectively, if the distribution is transparent, individuals’ wealth will increase. In the meantime, technologies will create many industries and job opportunities. So more people will be employed and paid. From this, we can find technology is, at least, not the direct and basic factor behind income gap.
As has suggested above, the underlying cause of income gap lies in inequality of distribution of resources, in particular the accessibility of education resources. And other factors such as the lack of social security and the imbalance of tax policies also play a part. Therefore, the technological progress is not to blame for the gap between haves and have-nots.

Some people believe that students at schools and universities can learn more from teachers than from the internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Stepping into new century, we find that internet has become an integral part of our life; education is no exception. There is a perception that teachers remain the main source of knowledge for students rather than the internet. As for me, it is of some truth though we cannot deny the advantages of the internet.
The development and prevalence of the Internet render us immense changes. In domain of education, students can browse abundant information via the internet so as to widen their horizon. Specifically, we can search out the information about the authors or their works. And also we can download the data that we need or even borrow the books from online libraries. Despite all these advantages, the internet cannot become the main channel of study, at least in present time. At first, the information from the internet is not systematic. And youngsters cannot distinguish whether the information is beneficial or harmful. Furthermore, students’ virtues as well as values cannot be cultivated in the right way by internet.
Teachers play a dominant role in students’ learning at universities and schools, which cannot be replaced by the internet. For one thing, the knowledge from teachers is more systematic and detailed. And then teaching in classes is a process of interaction between teachers and students by means of explaining and questioning. Moreover, the teachers are not only responsible for academic knowledge cramming, but also for the cultivation of values.
Therefore, at schools and universities students learn more from teachers. They can not only learn theoretical knowledge, but also form personality and virtues. Internet, as a new means of information channel, will be helpful for students’ learning.

Nowadays, people in some countries can choose to live and work anywhere they want because of the improvement of the transportation and communication technologies. Discuss the benefits and the drawbacks of the phenomenon.

negative and positive, are subjected to discussion.
Body 1: advantage of living wherever they want. 1. 21st century is characterized by social mobility, which enables people to find more opportunities and proper jobs. And also this practice strengthens the communication of talents and intelligence. 2. This encourages the development of communication and economy. 3. This gives a full play to personal freedom.
Body 1: In the past, people were confined in certain area due to the underdevelopment of transportation and communication means. But today people can change their jobs and find the place suitable for them without considering too much. Advantages are obvious. This mobility can bring people more opportunities and more choices. New places and new work can offer people more chances to know more, thus widening their vision. In addition, people can enjoy more freedom and exercise their ability. Without restrictions, they can choose wherever they feel fully relaxed and comfortable. Their imagination and creativity can find the right vent out.
Body 2: However, this practice may cause some negative effects. The most noteworthy one is that quick mobility will lead to the imbalance of regional development. Naturally, talents and funds will surely flow into those developed areas, which may cause the underdeveloped area to be even worse. What’s more, if this phenomenon continues in the long run, there will arise some problems much more serious. For example, the frequent migration of people will lead to the loss of some community traditions, cultural identity and local conventions. This, to some degree, is the cause of today’s segregation of social groups and loosening social relationships.
In conclusion, social mobility is an inevitable trend due to the development of society and technology. Of course, people can enjoy more freedom and opportunities. But its negative effects such as regional imbalance and loss of cultural traditions cannot be neglected.

Some people believe that rich countries provide poorer countries with other types of help rather than financial aid. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Body 1: why the shift is necessary at present?
Considerable evidence has indicated that there are numerous loopholes and defects of sheer financial aid. In some underdeveloped countries, corruption is really a headache and a large amount of funds from donation has been embezzled. The fund fails to reach people in poverty and difficulty; and public facilities are out of repair due to the lack of money. In these countries, the lack of lawful supervision renders the financial aid an appetizing meal for local officials and an airy dream for poor people. On the other hand, the financial aid is not sustainable. (在很难论证的情况下,可以适当地进行比喻) There are some similarities between financial aid and some medicines like tranquilizer. Specifically, it can calm the patients down immediately but fails to heal his or her psychological disorders. Likewise, financial help may solve some problems superficially, but cannot remove poverty completely.
Body 2: The effect of financial aid.
However, it does not necessarily mean that financial aid is of no redeeming features. When we are aware of the disadvantages of economic assistance, we should not go to another extreme by stopping it completely. After all, financial aid is more effective and efficient in dealing with some emergencies. And if rightly supervised, it can also avoid the drawbacks mentioned above. (Maybe, we should beware of the possibility that some people take them as the excuse for cutting financial help to poorer countries.)

Obesity, cardiovascular disease and insomnia are labeled as common complaints suffered by modern people. And most of them are closely associated with the absence of physical activities. Hence, it is argued that the establishment of more sport facilities will benefit public health. And I think it is far from enough.
It should be noted that the promotion of sport awareness relies on more investment of sport facilities. Nowadays, despite living standard improvement, our living quality experiences a surprising deterioration, largely due to the lack of physical exercises. So the advocate of more exercise requires huge investment in building facilities. The wide availability of facilities will definitely ignite public enthusiasm of participation. The sport facilities can be established in some densely populated communities, some gardens and even some comparatively underdeveloped regions. This may render every individual access sports on a daily basis.
The scarcity of facilities may play a part in people’s lack of sport awareness, but the deep-rooted cause is manifold. For example, in some developed areas, the abundance of sport facilities is amazing, but they are rarely used. Recently conducted survey indicates that people may be exhausted after a day’s toil. And quick living tempo spares them little time to consider their health. So the most essential thing is to give people more time and leisure to participate in activities. There is no consensus over the controversy whether new technologies should be introduced to change the underdevelopment of some countries, or free education should be provided to local people. Actually, both are in great need for developing countries.
The poverty and underdevelopment of developing countries can be attributed to some factors such as the lack of industries, absence of technologies and the inaccessibility of education and so on. In this sense, to introduce new technologies to those poverty-stricken areas is effective in changing the local situation. For one thing, new technologies can solve some urgent problems for local people. For example, new medical equipments can relieve the pressure of the shortage of medical resources in developing countries. For another, new technologies enable local people to have more chances of business and job opportunities. They can make full use of new technologies to development economy and improve their living standard.
It is undeniable that new technologies can solve some urgent problems effectively. But the deep-rooted cause behind the poverty of developing countries may be more than the lack of technologies. The effects of new technologies are usually short-term and immediate, but not sustainable. For example, for some impoverished people, they may have no access to new technologies. What can really change their fate is the equal access to education. Considering people’s low affordability of high tuition, free education is a better solution for poor people. Thus they can have the chance to rise.
Thus, in dealing with the situation of developing countries, new technologies can provide some immediate solutions, but in the long run, free education will turn out to be more effective and sustainable. A wiser way is to combine them together to improve and develop those countries.

The abundance of commodities, the prevalence of materialism and lower prices contribute to the soar of consumption. By comparison, cheaper goods have seemingly brought consumers some benefits; but its side-effects such as the waste of resources, the spur of consumerism cannot escape the blame.
The promotion of efficiency and fiercer trade competition render the price of commodities lower than before. People can afford dazzling types of goods and satisfy their needs with little cost. To a certain degree, this has largely reduced people’s living cost and provided them with more comforts and convenience. What’s more, the availability of cheaper commodities gives people more sense of happiness. And also the market will be healthier and sustainable.
However, the decline of commodity price may hurt in some aspects. After all, everything existing in this world may turn out to be a double-sided coin. For example, cheaper goods may impair the practitioner’s passion of related trades due to the decline of their payment. On the other hand, cheaper goods may encourage consumerism and buyers will not cherish anything they bought at lower price. This practice will surely lead to extravagance and waste of resources. What’s worse, cheaper goods may lead to vicious competition, and some manufacturers may resort to some under-table means such as counterfeit, fakery and knock-offs. Thus consumers may be exposed to flooding fake goods with inferior quality.
In conclusion, contrary to common expectation, cheaper price is not necessarily beneficial for people in a long run. Of course, it is not saying higher price is preferable. The point is that the quality and price of commodities should strike a balance.

Young people prefer to visit museums because they need not worry about the pressure in schools. There is no homework and no examinations for them. learning by interest should also be taken into consideration. In most cases, interest can spark students’ enthusiasm and energy in study. If a student show interest in a certain subject, he or she will get involved more energetically. Thus better effects will be achieved. By contrast, if students are forced to learn all subjects, they may become rebellious and some opposite effects may turn up. In conclusion, students should learn more subjects, especially in primary and secondary schools. This is beneficial for the formation of sounder values and wider vision. And their interest can be considered as a stimulus for better learning effects but should never be overemphasized.
Some people show concern about the proposal that students should be encouraged to evaluate and criticize their teachers. Skeptics hold that this may lead to disrespect and indiscipline. This concern is not wholly unjustified.
How to improve education quality is a wide concern for schools as well as parents. It is advised that students should evaluate their teachers, but this proposal has met strong opposition. I think it is feasible to some degree but some negatives should be considered beforehand.
Traditionally, students are not allowed to challenge teachers’ authority. But the trend has changed in the new era that they can criticize their superiors and tutors in some schools. Of course, there arise some disagreements but this practice, on a whole, is acceptable.
It is acceptable that teachers should be evaluated by their students to some degree. Students are the direct receiver of teachers’ lectures and lessons. Therefore, they are fully aware of how the teachers perform in teaching activities. Actually, teaching is a sort of service provided by teachers. Like any other services, the customers have the right to evaluate, criticize and even to complain. Hence, students also have the right to give response to the services they have obtained.
However, things will go too far if teachers’ performance is completely decided by students’ assessments. Students should be encouraged to evaluate their teachers objectively. But the fact shows that most students are not so mature and it is hard for them to form a reliable judgment about teaching quality. Some students may be rebellious and take the evaluation as a means to contradict teachers. Even worse, if the evaluation is matched to rewards, teachers may dare not to be strict with their students for fear of low appraisal. Though students are entitled to the evaluation and criticism of their teachers, it should be carried out on an objective and feasible footing. In conclusion, the practice of students’ evaluating teachers is acceptable within some framework. However, school authorities should strike a balance between students’ benefits and teachers’ interest, trying not to turn a good policy into a blade which hurts both sides.

Some people believe that reading books can better develop people’s imagination and language skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Reading helps the development of individuals’ imagination and language skills. But imagination and language cannot be achieved by reading alone.
A persons’ imagination cannot be achieved without systematic education and special training. Neither can it be inherited from their ancestors. Imagination is something that people should learn by reading and practicing. Facts show that those who are imaginative tend to be hardworking and of good education background. People are not born with imagination. Reading, of course, is a crucial link in our current education system. Therefore, reading forms an indispensable element in developing imagination.
Language development is based on reading too. There are four skills required in language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These four skills are closely associated with reading because it can provide learners with sufficient vocabulary and excellent linguistic senses. Actually, reading serves as a leading means for most students’ language acquisition.
However, the effects of reading should not be exaggerated. A person’s imagination requires his or her vision and information obtained from reading, but personal experiences are not dispensable. Imagination without personal experiences may turn out to be illusion or superstition. As for language learning, besides reading, constant practice tends to be of equal importance. After all, language is designed for communication, which focuses on practice.
In conclusion,…..

Nowadays, dazzling imported food permeates supermarket shelves and extends our diet choice. However, there arises some concern that it may cause environment problems and ruin local economy. In reality, despite some justification, this concern is of some exaggeration.
The revolution of modern delivery has considerably reduced the cost of transportation of products. For example, the introduction of container ship has facilitated the process of delivering some products of huge volume. In today’s world, the size and amount of goods are not in proportion to the cost of transportation. Thus the price of numerous imported goods is lower than the local ones. However, this advantage poses a threat to local farmers because low-price imported food may gnaw the market bit by bit. So, local economy should be protected by imposing some tariff on imported products.
International transportation is often bombarded with criticism for it guzzles up huge amount of fuels and thus causes colossal emission, which damages our environment. These skeptics are of some reason but never escape some exaggeration. Actually, compared with local food, the transportation of foreign food has been greatly improved for the adoption of some new airliners and container ships. And the most important thing is that imported food diversifies our diet and activates our market. The fact shows that in most cases people prefer to buy imported food for its high quality, low price and attractive taste.
Considering the above analysis, we can say the imported food is the natural product of globalized market. The advocate of local food seems to be of limited effects in protecting local economy and environment. It makes sense that we should promote the quality and marketability of local product, including local food.

Research suggests that majority of criminals who are sent to a prison would commit crimes when set free, what do you think of this case? What can be done to solve this problem? (Report)
Today, more school leavers are unable to find jobs. Discuss the causes of rising unemployment among young adults and suggest any solutions.
It is not a rare scene that many criminals relapse into old offenses after being set free. The rise of this phenomenon can be attributed to three main factors in terms of the government, society and criminals themselves.
The most striking cause behind this issue is that most ex-convicts have lost some basic living skills after a long imprisonment. They cannot adapt to the society smoothly or even suffer discrimination from the society. Hence some of them may find that to commit crimes is the only way to survive and to get social recognition. On the other hand, it cannot be denied that some criminals have not been rehabilitated in the prison. They are not remorseful for what they have done to others. When they re-step into the society, they feel it justified to do anything as they like because they never consider other people’s sufferings and losses. Besides, some people are born with the mentality different from ordinary people. They are subject to the impulse of committing crimes anytime and anywhere.
In dealing with this problem, there may be countless ways, but the priority should be given to two of them. First, the criminals should be given some training in order to grasp some basic living skills. Once they step into the society again, they can get adapted quickly and make their own living lawfully. Secondly, as for most criminals, sheer punishment may cause rebellion and revenge. So education should be given to criminals in combination with punishment until they realize their wrongness and deeply regret their wrong doings.
In conclusion, most criminals re-commit crimes when set free mainly because they are isolated from the society and lack basic skills for sustenance. To tackle this problem, the first and foremost thing is to give them more training helpful for their later life. And our present imprisonment system should make some change as well.

Some people think that companies and individuals, rather than governments, should pay to clean up pollution that they have caused. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
There is an assumption that governments should not pay for the cleaning of pollution because they are not the perpetrators. However, I think, governments should not deny the responsibility in dealing with and paying for cleaning up pollution which, though, is caused by companies and individuals.
Body 1: why the government should pay for the cleaning? Because the payment comes from taxation.
It is commonly accepted that people should pay for their own misbehaviors and errors. This principle, unquestionably, applies to the present case. That is to say, it is companies and individuals who have polluted the environment. Hence, they have to pay for the cleaning up. However, one thing that is worthy of our attention is that companies and individuals have paid taxes to the governments. If they pay for the pollution, their payment will be doubled. And governments, as the deputy agency, should spare their budgets for cleaning the environment. Body 2: what’s the fault of government in polluting the environment? They have the responsibility of supervising and regulating companies’ activities.
As for this case, however, governments cannot escape the blame of negligence and dereliction of their duties. It is a common practice that governments have the responsibility to regulate and supervise companies’ activities. They should take some precautions against the possible misbehavior; and when those offenses occur, they should take immediate measures. Thus, the occurrence of pollution can, to a certain degree, be attributed to the governments’ failure of carrying out their duties properly. And they should pay for their own faults.
Body 3: should companies and individuals deny all the faults in pollution? Of course, they should take some responsibility. As for those corporations who have made serious pollution, penalty should be inflected on them. as for individuals, environmental awareness should be promoted.

Nowadays, some people are no longer accustomed to some boring and routine jobs. They choose to do some temporary ones, thus having more free time to do things of their own interest. It is an acceptable choice and lifestyle for some people though it may not be suitable for all of us.
A stable job may turn out to be a nightmare to some people, especially youngsters saturated with energy, personality and creativity. Perhaps the most intolerable thing of a stable job is its lack of flexibility. Employees in the company are required to get in and out of work according to the fixed time. They are forced to follow the strict schedule and do some routing things every day. Moreover, almost all stable jobs demand the employees’ full involvement. Thus it is hard for people to spare more time to accompany their family members and have good time with their friends. Rarely can some young people bear this isolation, boredom and restriction.
However, temporary jobs seem to offer a balanced solution to this dilemma. Undoubtedly, most people choose temporary jobs for their flexibility and freedom. Perhaps, they just need to work for several months in a year. Thus they have enough time to do things they like such as travelling around the world. As for young people fresh from schools, what they need most may not be great fortune, but a wider vision. If they do temporary jobs, they can step out to see the world. From another aspect, temporary jobs tend to be demanding in one’s creativity and inspiration, and sometimes less exploitative. For those creative and capable souls, less restriction and more space are their priority in choosing jobs.
Of course, every lifestyle has some disadvantages. When a person makes a choice, that means he or she abandons something. Temporary jobs are the choice of this sort. They can provide more freedom and flexibility, but it may also mean unstable income, occasional unemployment and lack of sense of belonging. Nevertheless, it is a personal choice.

There may be some government members who are also teaching experts, but the majority of them lack the nearest contact with students, and the first-hand information. Some of them may have much more power, but that is not a convincing and acceptable reason in deciding education contents.
Compared with teachers’ role, governments tend to be lacking in objectivity. More or less, governments prefer to implant some ideas such as obedience and discipline in education. Caring for children is probably the most important thing of the society. It is suggested that all mothers and fathers should be required to take the childcare training courses. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?
Theoretically, every young parent should have access to courses of this sort, but many disturbing factors render this proposal uncertain to carry out. For example, quickening living pace and heavier burden make young people unable to spare time to learn the courses. Even worse, if the courses are of high price, some parents will be squeezed out due to their inability to pay. So what matters is not whether young parents are willing to take courses, but whether the government can provide them with free training. And they should also enjoy some subsidies so they can attend the courses without worrying about survival.
One thing should not escape our attention; that is, child care is not only the duty of young parents, but the whole society should take some responsibility. The community, government and school, all of them should make efforts in caring for the growth of children. They have the obligation to create a healthy environment for children, and child-care course is just one link of the whole chain.
As suggested above, it is advisable for young adults to attend some courses designed for childcare. This will be helpful for cultivating a healthy and promising generation. But it should be noted that the government should provide better security and more subsidies for young parents. Schools and communities should also take their responsibilities in caring for children.
And also the abundance of commodities has stimulated conspicuous consumption, which leads to serious waste of resources. In particular, some luxurious products may have more serious impact on our environment due to their extravagance and greediness. In the meantime, in the era of consumerism, consumption outweighs protection; exploitation replaces preservation. In another word, people are lacking in environment protection awareness. This may be the root cause of environmental deterioration.
(Education helps people develop the virtue of thrift, and thereby avoiding over-consumption.)
(In the meantime, the common environment awareness should be promoted and spiritual needs intensified. People should be dissuaded from plunging into sheer materialism.) (2009.10.24) Bar Chart + Table
