Unit 3 Where Principles Come First
录音原文
Section A
11. M: I’m going to be up all night studying for the exam. I can’t afford to fail again.
W: Do you really think that’s wise? I think that you need to talk to your teacher and find out
what you need to focus on.
Q: What does the woman imply?
12. W: Go ahead and find a seat for yourself. The lecture will begin in a few minutes.
M: Thanks, but I’d rather stand. If it’s not good, I’ll leave and continue with my schoolwork.
Q: What will the man probably do?
13. W: I’ve been for the whole week. I honestly don’t want to paint the room this weekend.
M: Neither do I. but I think we should get it done. Perhaps we can use some extra help.
Q: What does the man suggest?
14. M: Remember, you promised to help me with my homework for English class.
W: But I want to watch this program first. It is almost over. Wait a moment please.
Q: What does the man mean?
15. W: I forgot to bring John’s mobile phone number. We are supposed to meet him here at the train station.
M: That’s like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
Q: What does the man suggest?
16. M: Did you buy these oranges from the supermarket three blocks away? They are good.
W: Good? They are the best I’ve ever had.
Q: What does the woman mean?
17. M: Has Jimmy returned from Tokyo yet?
W: Yes, he came back just a couple of days ago. But he is leaving Paris for London tomorrow.
Q: Where is Jimmy now?
18. W: If I’m not mistaken, your birthday is coming up. Has your brother sent you anything?
M: Not yet. We’re preparing a party last week. He has been quite busy these days. He never forgets though.
Q: What does the man imply?
Conversation One
M: Hi, Mary. Do you want to start the lab report after we finish this experiment?
W: l can’t. in fact, I need to finish it early because I need to go to the psychology department to talk to Professor Catherine about a job opening.
M: You mean a job on campus?
W: Yeah. And it sounds pretty interesting. It involves helping with your study
on learning dtyle. You know, about how some people learn best by sight, while others learn best by heaing or touching.
M: Yeah, I know that’s an area of expertise.
W: Right. In the study she’s taking some high school students who aren’t doing well in classes and testing them to find out their learning styles. Then tutors, people like me, will work with them presenting material suitable for their particular learning style.
M: That’s interesting. Now will you mostly do the testing or the tutoring?
W: Both I hope. I want to be involved from start to finish.
M: Are you getting paid for this?
W: Perhaps, but not much. Anyway it doesn’t matter. I just want to have some experience.
M: Yeah. And it’ll be nice to help those students, too.
W: That’s what I thought when I saw the ad. You could do it, too. You don’t have to be in her classes to work on the study.
M: Really? Do you have any idea of the schedule?
W: Late afternoon then evening for tutoring. After all the kids are in regular classes until three thirty.
M: Actually that’s perfect for me.
W: Then come along. We will save the lab report for later. But we’d better do a good job on our experiment first.
M: Yeah. First thing’s first.
Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
19. What are the speakers mainly discussing?
20. What will the tutors do for the high school students?
21. Why is the woman interested in working with Professor Catherine?
22. What will the speakers probably do next?
Conversation Two
W: Wake up! The movie is over. You missed the best part.
M: Oh, I’m sorry. I must have dozed off during the last few minutes.
W: Right. You were gone for so long that you should have brought your pillow and blanket. So, what did you think about it?
M: Well, overall, I’m little disappointed with the movie. I mean, the story were so strange, you have to admit. I mean, really. How believable is a plot about a captain who navigates his spaceship to the far-reaches of the space and encounters a race of frog people. I mean, come on.
W: Oh, I thought it was fantastic. You have to admit that the special effects were great, and the acting wasn’t bad either.
M: Oh, come on. What about the ship’s communication officer? I mean, what did you think about him? Wasn’t a little strange to you? He was always talking to himself, and he had that funny hairstyle.
W: Well, he was a little unusual, but the ship’s doctor was amazing. It was so cool when he brought the captain back to life during one of the battles.
M: That was pretty realistic, but then the rest of the movie just went from bad to worse. And the photography was so terrible!
W: Yes, she most definitely is. She loves her students and is very understanding of our problems. She was always available before, during, and after classes to help us with any ideas we couldn’t understand. I really liked her as a person. I just hated all the reading we had to do in classical literature.
M: How do you know? You were asleep most of the time. So I don’t thin you are in a position to judge the photography. It wasn’t that bad.
W: Ah, well, you may think so.
Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
23. Which is not a factor leading to the man’s disappointment with the movie?
24. What kind of movie have they seen?
25. Which word may best describe the woman’s attitude toward the photography?
Section B
Passage One
The young people today have to live in a world full of competition. It is more important than ever before to work well at school if they want to have a chance in the job market after graduation. It’s no wonder that many young people worry about letting down their parents, their peers and themselves. In trying to please everyone, they take on too many tasks until it becomes harder to balance homework assignments, parties, sports activities and friends. The result is that young people suffer from stress.
There are different ways to deal with stress. Everyone knows that caffeine, whether it is in the form of coffee or soft drinks, keeps you awake and alert. But caffeine is a drug which can become addictive. In the end, like other drugs, caffeine only leads to more stress.
A better way to deal with stress is to exercise: research has proved that physical exercise is a good release for stress, because it increases certain chemicals in the brain, which calm you down. Making sure you get enough sleep is also an important way of avoiding stress and of staying healthy and full of energy. Another way to avoid stress is: managing your time effectively. It is better to do a few tasks really well, than lots of tasks badly. Know your limits and try not to take on too much. Finally, if it all gets beyond your control, don’t worry too much. Find this time to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten or twenty minutes. Do it regularly, and it will help you calm down and put things into perspective.
Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.
26. What is more important for young people according to the passage?
27. Why should we guide ourselves against caffeine?
28. Which of the following is not mentioned to deal with stress?
29. What is recommended to do if the situation is beyond control?
Passage Two
In April 2007, United Nations released its latest climate change report. According to the report, two-or-three-degree rise in temperature above pre-industrial levels will cause widespread and serious damage to ecosystems, leading to the extinction of up to 30% of plant and animal species worldwide. For the human beings, they will suffer from heat stress and greater spread of tropical diseases.
Potentially the biggest impact of climate change in Australia will be on the supply of water. The prediction is that there will be more in the place where we don’t want it but less where we do. In other words, there will be increased flooding in northern Australia, but southern and eastern Australia will have to see increased drought. With every capital city in Australia currently experiencing water shortages and rural areas on water trading, even a small shift in climate could have major impacts on how we use water.
Rural Australia particularly faces significant social impacts from further water restrictions and research is needed at a regional level to address rural water concerns. Short-term solutions, such as water trading, won’t help farms suffer less from the losses caused by increased evaporation. Evaporation impacts on soil moisture, and on top of that farmers can expect decreased rainfall and decreased run-off. Rainfall to run-off is in a ratio of one to three, so that any decrease in rainfall reduces run-off by as much as three times.
Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.
30. According to the UN report, What will be the effect of climate change?
31. What will be the biggest impact of climate change in the Australia?
32. What is mentioned as a short-term solution?
Passage Three
Have you ever had such kind of trouble: when you were traveling, your airplane was late? In recent years, there is a very common problem and it is getting worse. Airport delays make people angry and cost the country billions in the lost work time. The Federal Aviation Administration or FAA is the government agency that manages air travel. After studying the problem of airplane delays, they found eleven major problems and proposed eleven ways to deal with them.
Some of the problems are caused because different regions of the country do things differently. And what’s more, more planes are flying in the sky. A strong economy has more people using airplanes to travel around. Airplanes are a form of mass transportation now, like trains and buses in the past. More planes in the airport cause delays. Weather is another main reason for delays. Statistics show that weather causes about 70% of delays. Fog or freezing rain can cause delays.
The first thing the FAA wants to do is take strict control of the airplanes in
different regions during heavy traffic times and bad weather. A national center would be set up to make decisions on things that affect the whole country. The FAA also wants to put more distance between planes in the sky when the weather is bad. This may even cause more delays. The FAA knows that their solutions will not cure the problems of airport delays. But they will try their best to make things better. There are just too many planes, too few traffic controllers, and not enough new technology.
Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
33. What is the problem studied by FAA?
34. What is the main cause of airplane delays according to the study?
35. Why is it likely that the FAA will create more delays?

Part I Writing
On Teacher-and-student Relationship
The relationship between a teacher and a student can be either good or bad, helpful or harmful. Either way, the relationship can affect the student for the rest of his life. A good teacher-student relationship will make learning enjoyable and well mutually understandable. Whereas, a had relationship can discourage the
student from learning and make teaching an unpleasant task.
In order to have a good teacher-student relationship, it is important that the teacher and the student respect each other. The teacher does not have to force the student to learn. In fact, many students will often work hard simply because they respect their teachers and want to please them. The teacher should motivate and encourage the student without forcing him. He needs patience and understanding. Learning can be fun when the student has the right attitude about it. As for the student, he must always show the teacher proper respect. He should be eager to learn and willing to work hard. It is also important to listen carefully and pay attention. Otherwise he would not be able to profit fully from his teacher's knowledge and assistance.
In conclusion, a good teacher-student relationship can be mutually beneficial. The student gains knowledge eagerly and enjoyably, and the teacher gains satisfaction from his job.
