Cassette Style Mating Connectors H11, H15, H15S2, H15S4Description

All 19\" cassette type converters are equipped with eitherH11-, H15-, H15S2 or H15S4 male connectors. Matingfemale connectors are available as accessories accordingto the following tables. The four H-type connector versionsare specially designed for power supply applications,capable of handling high operating currents. The con-nectors have an integrated code key system allowing manycoding possibilities. Converters with high output currentnormally use two contacts in parallel to keep the voltagedrop across the connector as low as possible. In case ofvery high currents, the connectors are fitted with round highcurrent contacts.

H11 Connectors

This connector has eleven contacts in one vertical columnmarked 2 to 32. Mating and mounting conditions areaccording to DIN 41612. The connector contacts are hard-silver-plated and correspond to quality class 1, with respectto electrical and mechanical life time.Table 1: H11 Connector Survey

This special connectors derive from the H15 connectorshaving 7 standard contacts as above, combined with 2(H15S2) or 4 (H15S4) high current contacts (jacks)according to DIN 41626. These jacks are speciallydesigned to handle currents from 20A up to 40 A. Theycorrespond to quality class 1, with respect to electrical andmechanical life time. The contact material is high qualityBeryllium-Copper (CuBe treated) with gold-plated surface.The high current jacks are joint separately to theconnectors. To install them, carefully follow the assemblyinstructions. It is extremely important to solder cables,screw cable terminals or heat shrink sleeves to high currentjacks first, before inserting them into the moulding.Paralleled converters should preferably be interconnectedon current bars or at a star point.

be inserted at a 90° angle in order to prevent possible shortcircuits between the cable terminals, especially inapplications with high vibration environment. Heat shrinksleeves might be necessary for further isolation purposesor to keep clearances and creepage distances at specifiedlevels.

An extraction tool allows removal of the high current jacksfor replacement (see fig. 15).

Caution: The use of an adequate cable strain relief device (e.g.Cable Hood etc.) is essential, in order to protect the high currentcontact jacks from damage. Never screw, solder or manipulatethese contacts when the connector is plugged into the maleconnector! The use of highly flexible cables is stronglyrecommended.

This connector type (male version) is used in the followingconverter series (case size): PSK and PSS (K01), K (K02),P (Q04) with output currents ≥20 A.

An efficient coding system is of great importance and

cannot be valued highly enough in complex electronicsystems. Since power supplies handle high currents andvoltages, any false connection could not only be extremelydangerous but also quite costly.

This integrated polarizing system allows effortless codingby the simple insertion of Coding Wedges into the femaleconnector mouldings. The corresponding counter-parts,i.e., the coding tabs of the male moulding just have to bebroken off to match the right female part. Major advantagesare high mechanical stability and easy handling. The H11connectors have 10 and the H15 connectors have 8 codingpositions. Using 4 coding wedges results in 210 (H11)respectively 70 (H15) different coding possibilities. High current plugs and jacks can be disassembled from themoulding by means of a special Extraction Tool (H15 S2,H15 S4). Holding the extraction tool over the centre of theconnector's female contact the outer part of the extractiontool should be fed between the moulding and the outside ofthe female contact itself. This releases the spring clip fixingthe contacts, in order to pull the contacts out of theirmoulding for replacement. If the operation is performedcorrectly very little force is required. Extreme care shouldbe taken since incorrect procedure and excessive forcecould damage the tool and/or connector.

This tool is available as an accessory for both screw orsolder high current contacts.

Note: In order to avoid damage, never manipulate highcurrent contacts when plugged-in!

The retention clip V is an accessory which guaranteessecure connection even under severe vibration, as forexample in mobile applications. One connector retentionsystem fits to almost all units and all of the aforementionedconnector types.
