Eating a healthy, calorie-controlled diet during pregnancy can help prevent excessive weight gain and cut the risk of pregnancy complications, researchers report.

In Europe and the United States, up to 40 percent of women gain more than the

recommended weight during pregnancy and this excess weight are associated with a number of major health problems, according to background information in the study published online May 17 in the BMJ.

In the report, an international team of researchers reviewed the findings of 44 studies that included more than 7,200 women and found that dietary plan resulted in an average reduction in weight gain during pregnancy of nearly 8.8 pounds, compared with 1.5 pounds for exercise, and 2.2 pounds for exercise and diet combined.

Dietary plan also provided the most benefit in preventing serious pregnancy

complications such as preeclampsia (a sudden shock in the mother's blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy), diabetes and premature birth, according to lead researcher Dr. Shakila Thangaratinam from Queen Mary, University of London, and colleagues.

The study authors concluded that dietary and lifestyle plan in pregnancy improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

However, an accompanying article suggested that there is not enough evidence to support dietary or any other type of plans.

\"At a time when more than half the women of reproductive age in the United Kingdom are overweight or obese, any analysis of weight management in pregnancy is timely and welcome,\" Lucilla Poston and Lucy Chappell of St. Thomas' Hospital in London wrote in the article. But, they noted, the study does not provide the evidence needed to reassess guidelines for weight management in pregnancy.

The editor added that several ongoing studies may provide more insight into effective ways to prevent excessive weight gain during pregnancy.

31 According to the researchers report, the pregnancy complications are associated with___. A overweight B bad mood C undernutrition D overexercise

32 The study published online implies that ____.

A almost half of the women in America gain too much weight during pregnancy B all women gain too much weight during pregnancy

C up to 40% women in the world gain too much weight during pregnancy

D the women in Europe gain less weight during pregnancy than those in America

33, In international team of researchers find that ____.

A dietary plan is more effective than the exercise in reducing weight gain

B the pregnant women should combine the dietary plan and exercise together C exercise can help pregnant women lose 1.5 pounds per month D the best way to gain weight during pregnancy is to exercise

34, Dr. Thangaratinam suggests that _____.

A the pregnant women should eat a calorie-controlled diet

B dietary plan is the best way to deal with diabetes and premature birth in medicine term C the baby cannot obtain enough nutrition due to the dietary plan

D dietary plan is good for the pregnant women and harmful for the babies.

35, From the article written by Lucilla Poston and Lucy Chappell, we know that _____. A the relation between excessive weight and pregnancy complications is a urgent topic B the women in UK are not overweight except at their reproductive age

C they already find out the evidence which can support the function of dietary plan D they will work on the overweight problem of British women in the nest step

36, The general idea of this passage is ______.

A to describe the effect of weight to the health of women during pregnancy B to solve the increasing overweight problem faced by American women C to tell us a new way to deal with the overweight problem D to interest more scientists to care about the overweight issue

Eating too much sugar can eat away at your brainpower, according to US scientists who published a study Tuesday showing how a steady diet of high-sugar corn juice weakened lab rats' memories.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) fed two groups of rats a fluid containing high-sugar corn juice as drinking water for six weeks.

One group of rats was supplemented with brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids in the form of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the other group was not.

Before the sugar drinks began, the rats were enrolled in a five-day training session in a complicated maze. After six weeks on the sweet solution, the rats were then placed back in the maze to see how they fared.

\"The DHA-deprived animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic

activity,\" said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

\"Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier.\"

A closer look at the rat brains revealed that those who were not fed DHA supplements had also developed signs of resistance to insulin(胰岛素), a hormone that controls blood sugar and regulates brain function.

\"Because insulin can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, the hormone may signal neurons to create reactions that disrupt learning and cause memory loss,\" Gomez-Pinilla said.

In other words, eating too much sugar could interfere with insulin's ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar, which is necessary for processing thoughts and emotions.

\"Insulin is important in the body for controlling blood sugar, but it may play a different role in the brain, where insulin appears to disturb memory and learning,\" Gomez-Pinilla said.

\"Our study shows that a high-sugar diet harms the brain as well as the body. This is something new.\"

High-sugar corn juice is commonly found in soda, applesauce, baby food and other processed snacks.

The average American consumes more than 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of high-sugar corn juice per year, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

While the study did not say what the equivalent might be for a human to consume as much high-sugar corn juice as the rats did, researchers said it provides some evidence that metabolic syndrome can affect the mind as well as the body.

\"Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think,\" said Gomez-Pinilla. \"Eating a high-sugar diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage.\"

37, In the research studied by UCLA, the main difference for the two groups of rats is _____. A if their diets are added with brain-boosting medicine B if they have undertaken the maze training C if they are fed by high-sugar corn juice D if they are placed back in the maze again

38, The researchers in UCLA deprive DHA from one group of rats since _____. A they want to prove DHA is effective to prevent rats from brain decline B they hope the rats can behave better in the maze game C DHA can develop the brain of rats D DHA will weaken the memories of rats

39, The DHA-deprived group of rats act slower because ______.

A the insulin in their body cannot normally regulate the absorption of sugar B the rats in this group lose the ability to create insulin C the generated insulin is too much for the rats

D the insulin can overcome the blood-brain barrier and kill cells

40, The author lists the corn juice consumption of American in order to illustrate _______. A human may face the same memory-decline problem as the rats B the high-sugar food is the favorite of American C American like the corn juice much than the rats D American shouldn’t eat high-sugar food anymore

41, According to the passage, we know _____.

A the mind might be affected if the diet is unreasonable B the mind is usually harmed after the body

C the mind is much easier to be affected compared with the body D it is impossible to recover once the mind is injured

42, In order to avoid the memory decline, what does the scientist suggest? A adopting some auxiliary medicine B increasing the production of insulin C eating a high-sugar diet

D practicing your mind more often

The U.S. Navy may hurt more dolphins and whales by using sonar and explosives in the Pacific Ocean than thought, according to a more thorough analysis that reflects new research and covers naval activities in a wider area than previous studies.

The Navy estimates its use of explosives and sonar may unintentionally cause more than 1,600 instances of hearing loss or other injury to marine mammals each year, according to a draft

environmental impact statement that covers training and testing planned from 2014 to 2019. The Navy calculates the explosives could potentially kill more than 200 marine mammals a year. A notice about the study was due to appear Friday in the Federal Register.

The Navy uses sonar to track enemy submarines, torpedoes, mines and other potential threats underwater. Scientists say the sound may disrupt marine animals' feeding patterns and scare some species of whales, causing them to surface rapidly.

The old Navy analysis, covering 2009-2013, estimated unintentional injury or death to about 100 marine mammals in Hawaii and California, although no deaths have been reported. The larger numbers are partially the result of the Navy's use of new research on marine mammal behavior and updated computer models that predict how sonar affects animals.

The Navy also expanded the scope of its study to include things like in-port sonar testing — something sailors have long done but wasn't analyzed in the Navy's last environmental impact statement. The analysis covers training and testing in waters between Hawaii and California for the first time as well.

\"Each time around, each time we swing through this process, we get better, we take a harder look, we become more inclusive,\" said John Van Name, senior environmental planner at the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Zak Smith, staff attorney at the Natural Resources Defence Council, said he's encouraged the Navy reduced the threshold for the level of sonar it found to affect beaked whales — a species that appears to be particularly sensitive to the noise.

\"My first glance shows there are positive steps,\" Smith said after he took a quick look at the 1,800-page document. But he said he would have to look at the details before giving his full assessment.

43 The statement of US navy implies that ____ .

A the previous studies may underestimate the harm to marine mammals

B the previous studies didn’t realize the hurt of using sonar and explosive to marine mammals C their current study is based on the conclusion of previous studies D the previous studies obtained an opposite results.

44 The study completed by Navy concludes that ______.

A the use of sonar and explosive may cause the marine mammals to become deaf B about 1600 whales have lost their hearing each year

C about 200 mammals have been killed each year due to the use of explosive D the use of sonar can only affect the hearing of marine mammals

45 The use of sonar hurts marine animals since ______.

A both the motion and body could be affected by the sound of sonar B all whales could be easily scared by the sound of sonar

C the marine animals would stop feeding once hearing the sound of sonar D sonar will cause the food shortage of marine animals

46 Compared with the current study, the old studies ______. A missed the effect of sonar on marine mammals B failed to report the true death numbers C did not model by computer

D presented an exaggerated numbers

47 Zak Smith suggests the Navy _____. A reduce the accuracy of sonar B reduce the use of sonar

C stop killing the beaked whales

D make the beaked whales less sensitive to sonar

48 The main purpose of this passage is to _____. A protect the marine mammals

B investigate the lives of marine mammals C develop the technology of sonar D study the species of whales

And the heat goes on. Forecasters predict toasty temperatures will stretch through the summer in the U.S. And that's a bad sign for wildfires in the West.

The forecast for June through August calls for warmer-than-normal weather for about

three-quarters of the nation, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration said Thursday. The warmth is expected south of a line stretching from middle New Jersey to southern Idaho. Only tiny portions of northwestern U.S. and Alaska are predicted to be cooler than average and that's only for June, not the rest of the summer.

Last May until April was the hottest 12-month period on record for the nation with records going back to 15. This year so far has seen the hottest March, the third warmest April and the fourth warmest January and February in U.S. weather history. And it was one of the least snowy years on record in the states except Alaska.

Some people called it the year without winter.

And the outlook for summer is \"more of the same,\" said Jon Gottschalck, head of forecast operations at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md. \"There's definitely a tilt toward being above normal through the summer.\"

For some areas of the Southwest that could mean temperatures 1 or even 2 degrees warmer than normal on average, and maybe close to half a degree warmer than normal in the East, he said.

One of the reasons is that much of the country's soil is already unusually dry. So the sun doesn't use as much energy evaporating water in the soil and instead heats up the air near the ground even more, Gottschalck said.

Forecasters say the combination of the heat and dryness will only make western

wildfires worse. The fire season has already gotten off to a dramatic start. Wildfires in northern Arizona and northern Colorado forced residents to flee their homes on Thursday.

Fires in those areas could be even worse on Friday, said Greg Carbin, the meteorologist who coordinates warnings at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.

\"To see fires to the extent that they are this early isn't a good sign,\" he said. And the summer forecast is for \"a pretty significant wildfire season developing across the western United States.\"

49 The forecast of American weather for June through August predicts that ______. A some areas can still enjoy cool weather at the beginning of June B the temperature of the whole nation will be warmer than normal

C the weather in Alaska will be cooler than average in the whole summer D the weather in most areas will stay the same as average

50 Compared with the records back to 15, A the weather is much warmer

B the weather in this June is the hottest C the weather is the hottest in this summer D it hasn’t snow for several years in America

51 According to the statement of Jon Gottschalck, we know that in this summer _____. A the temperature in Southwest increases much evident than that in East B the weather in East will be cooler than other areas C the weather in Southwest will be the hottest

D the weather in Southwest will be 1 or 2 degrees warmer than the East

52 Gottschalck attribute the temperature increase to the reason that _______. A more energy of the sun is used to increase the ground temperature B the dry soil is easy to absorb heat from the sun

C water can reduce the temperature of ground while evaporating D the energy of the sun is much stronger than before

53 The forecasters imply that ______.

A the wildfires have already caused damages to the Northern areas

B the wildfires are going to start in the Northern areas

C the residents in some Northern areas have not been affected by wildfires D the wildfires in Northern areas have been under control

54 This passage ______.

A does not propose an effect way to control wildfires B aims to provide technology to reduce the temperature

C suggests the government to flee the residents whose lives are threatened by wildfires D finds out that the warmer temperature is the cause of wildfires.

Personal genetic testing does not lead to an increased use of health services, a new study finds. The opportunities for people to undergo genetic tests to learn their degree of risk for developing a disease are increasing, and some experts fear this might lead to overuse of expensive medical care.

The new study, published online May 17 in the journal Genetics in Medicine, looked at 217 healthy people, ages 25 to 40, who participated in testing to determine their genetic

susceptibility to certain diseases. The testing was offered by their health plan. The researchers analyzed the use of health care services by these people one year before and one year after their genetic testing.

The health care behavior of the participants in the genetic testing was compared to a group of about 400 people who did not have genetic testing. The results showed that participants in the genetic testing group did not change their overall use of health care services -- such as physician visits and laboratory tests and procedures -- compared with those who did not have genetic testing.

\"There are a lot of unanswered questions about how genetic test results can be used to guide people towards making positive lifestyle and health behavior changes,\" Colleen McBride, chief of the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute's Social and Behavioral Research Branch, said in a news release from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

\"This study goes a long way towards bringing data to these debates and shows that people are not likely to make inappropriate demands of health delivery systems if they are properly informed about the limitations of genetic tests,\" she added.

55 According to the passage, the use of personal genetic testing will _____. A provide a reference to the potential diseases

B play a role to remind people pay attention to their health C efficiently find out the potential diseases D make a profitable career

56 What the personal genetic test worried some experts is that _____. A the test may cause unreasonable use of the health services B the test may provide incorrect information for patients’ health C the test is lack of scientific proof

D the test may cause panic among patients

57 In the study published online, they did the genetic testing for 217 healthy people in order to ______.

A observe if these people will use more health services B find out the diseases which may harm after many years C test the reliability of personal genetic testing

D help the people who cannot afford the normal health services

58 The study includes two groups of people for the purpose of ______. A comparing their use of expensive health services

B identifying if the genetic tests are suitable for all people C adopting different procedures of genetic testing D trying to solve some unanswered questions

59 The statement of Colleen McBride tells us ______.

A the genetic testing is still a technology needed to improved

B the genetic testing affects the lifestyle of people to a large extent

C the genetic testing plays an important role in making a positive lifestyle D the health behaviors of people have been changed by the genetic testing

60 The main purpose of this passage is probably to ______.

A enhance the faith of medical institution to perform the genetic testing B appeal people to take the genetic testing C promote the function of the genetic testing D reveal the unreliability of the genetic testing

Title: Does everyone have to go to college? Clues:

What can you get from college?

Does every celebrity receive the higher education? 范文:

Whether the young have to receive the higher education in order to succeed has increasingly become a hot topic of discussion recently.

It is reasonable to treat the education and life in college as the most important and precious period for everyone. Not only the rich and fascinating knowledge the college has, but also the environment, as well as friends you could make, will be the most valuable factors for ambitious young people. That is also the reason why more and more parents try their best to ensure the children can be accepted by high-qualified universities. Therefore, in this perspective, the young who do get the chance to be enrolled should never waste their college period with no or just very little outcomes. Although there is no doubt for the importance of college education, that does not mean the people who never go to college will definitely miss a promising life. The most powerful example to illustrate this point is that countless celebrities never receive good education but have an envied career which captures people’s attentions around the world.
