W:False.
M:Actually, that’s true. I’m sorry, Sally.⑯ (Text 10)
Hello, everyone! Shimmers Dance Club will be offering new classes this spring due to popular demand. Angela Stevenson will be back this term, running the street dance class. This class will be on Tuesdays, and instead of the normal hours from 6:30 to 7:30, we’ll be running the class for an hour and a half, ⑰ so it will continue until 8 o’clock. This means we have to charge higher fees, from 8.50 to 10.50. Next, Janine Davis will still be teaching the Latin dance.⑱ Instead of being on Monday, these classes will now be on Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:00. The fee will still be 7.50 for the hour.⑲ Last but not least, Andrew is taking over the folk dance. This class is for early risers as it starts at 8:30 on Saturday morning and finishes at 10:00.⑳ This will cost 11.00. All the other classes remain the same as on the winter timetable. We hope there’s something for all of you at Shimmers!

I had a picnic one day with my sister. We both like to ride her motorcycle and that day we rode it to the nearest park. We bought some coffee and cakes, and then we enjoyed our food. Within a few hours, the sky changed and looked ready for a heavy rain. We packed everything and were ready to go. My sister, who was sitting on a bench then, suddenly was very still and couldn’t talk to me. She couldn’t move. Her eyes were rolling and she was about to lose consciousness(知觉). I held her in my arms and asked if she wanted to rest. She didn’t answer and only said “Sorry.”
It started to rain and I didn’t know what to do. She was fighting to stay aware but her skin was pale and her eyes were acting strangely. Suddenly, from nowhere, a woman on a bicycle appeared, wearing a raincoat. “She isn’t looking good. Do you want me to call an ambulance(救护车)?” “Yes, please, yes!” I begged.
She did. Struggling with the rain, she managed to call some policemen, who quickly helped me carry my sister to a safer place. The ambulance arrived and we went to a hospital, where she was treated in time and she came to life the next morning after some rest and medical help.
An interesting fact was that I guessed the woman in the raincoat was a doctor or a nurse. I later learned from one of the police officers who told me: “No. She was an ordinary person who took some courses on emergency situations(紧急情况).”
I am so grateful that she appeared exactly at the right moment. I don’t know why or how. I didn’t even get the chance to say thanks to her.

Some birds are masters of crime(犯罪). That means these species steal food from other birds and get away with it. Scientists have long wondered what these birds have in common. A new study suggests that big body size does not predict bad behavior. Instead, it is the size of the birds’ brains that matters most.
To learn more about what makes some birds tend toward a life of crime and how they steal food from other birds, scientists analyzed 856 published reports of thieves. Researcher Julie said she started the project after watching birds steal dry dog food out of unattended bowls. She read about some dramatic examples of thievery, including birds that stole food from others flying in midair and highspeed chases during which birds zigzagged(作之字形行进,曲折移动)through the sky. She learned that members of some species disturb other birds until they spit up food in their mouth.
Families that steal also tend to eat fish, mice, and other vertebrates(脊椎动物) instead of just insects. These meatier(多肉的) meals are hard to catch, and they deliver lots of valuable calories, so they are tempted to steal.
Finally, birds that steal tend to have big brains in relation to their bodies. That may seem surprising, since human bullies(欺凌弱小者) are often thought to be stronger in size.
But for birds, stealing isn’t about strength. It takes a clever brain to get food out of another hungry bird’s claws, especially if that bird is bigger than the other.

It has been some time since Jack saw the old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit(追寻) of
the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy__life,__Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife__and__son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr.__Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼) is on Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel(新闻短片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
“Jack, did you hear me?”
“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.
“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.
“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” Mom said.
“He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories: every picture, every piece of furniture. Jack stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack?” Mom asked. “The box is gone,” Jack said. “What box?” Mom asked.
“There was a small gold__box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever told me was ‘the thing I value__most’,” Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,”Jack said sadly. 注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return
address caught his attention. It read “Mr.__Belser”. Jack tore the package open. There inside was the gold__box and an envelope. Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside. “Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It’s the thing I valued__most in my life.” A small key was taped to the note. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it. Paragraph 2:
Inside he found these words carved: Jack, thanks for your time! Belser. “Oh,
My God! This is the thing he valued most...” Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days. “Why?”
his assistant asked. “I need some time to spend with my wife__and__son,” he said.
