Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this unnoticed form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where behaviors are sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They (elevators) are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift-users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.

When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

Newcomers to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most 2 / 4

people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone. Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be understood as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said. 61. The main purpose of the article is to _____.

A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator

B. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator C. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride D. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator behaviors

A. ignore B. judge C. put up with D. make use of 65. According to the article, people feel awkward in lifts because of _____.

A. the lack of space B. someone’s strange behaviors

Without a shadow of a doubt, Brazil is the the most successful football nation of all time, with five World Cups won. But this nation has something else to be proud of.

Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth—but more by chance than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.

Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.

Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

\"Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and upper class values—not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,\" says Martine. \"They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behaviour and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.\"

Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. \"This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction.\" says Martine. 66. According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth_______.

A. by educating its citizens B. by careful family planning C. by accident D. by developing TV programs 67. According to the passage, many Third World countries_______.

A. haven’t yet found an effective measure to control their population B. would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rate C. haven’t attached much importance to birth control D. neglected the role of TV plays in family planning

68.The phrase \"puts it down to\" (Line 1, Para. 3) is closest in meaning to \"_______\"

A. contributes to B. owes it to C. finds it a reason for D. compares it to 69.Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil’s birth rate because_______.

A. they keep people sitting long hours watching TV B. they popularize birth control measures

C. people are drawn to their attractive package D. they have gradually changed people’s way of life 70.What is Martine’s conclusion about Brazil’s population growth?

A. The increase in birth rate will promote consumption.

B. Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.(相互矛盾的) C. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.

D. A country’s production is limited by its population growth.

The private automobile (私家车) has long played an important role in the US. In fact, it has become a necessary and

important part of the American way of life. In 1986, 69% of American families owned at least one car, and 38% had more than one. By giving workers rapid transportation, the automobile has freed them from having to live near their place of work. This has encouraged the growth of the cities, but it has also led to traffic problems.

For farm families the automobile is very helpful. It has made it possible for them to travel to town very often for business and for pleasure, and also to transport their children to distant schools.

Family life has been affected in various aspects. The car helps to keep families together when it is used for picnics, outings, and other shared experiences. However, when teenage children have the use of the car, their parents can’t keep an eye on them. There is a great danger if the driver has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs--- or is “showing off” by speeding or breaking other traffic laws. Mothers of victims of such accidents have formed an organization called MADD (Mother Against Drunk Driving). These women want to prevent further tragedies. They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest driving age. Students have formed a similar organization. SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) are spreading the same message among their friends.

Americans have different attitudes towards the automobile. For some, it is a necessity. But for others, it is also a mark of social position and for young people, a sign of becoming an adult. Altogether, cars mean very much to Americans. The phenomenon of waste can often be seen in our daily life. As is shown in the picture, when students have dinner in the school canteen, they throw so much left-over food into the waste collector, which upsets the teachers and workers. This scene reminds me of similar problems around us. It is not uncommon to see things go to waste in schools. Some students do not turn off the lights when they leave the classroom, others leave the water running after using it, and still others throw away their pens, tapes or even notebooks just because they don’t like them. Such behavior will only contribute to students forming bad habits.

To avoid wasting food at school, we should first of all realize the significance of saving and be aware of our own misdoings. Then, we need to take action and be careful with the things we eat or use in our daily life. Also,we should persuade others not to waste things.
