What Is Success?
What is the definition of success? I’ve searched the answer in Baidu, and then found out some so-called necessities of success, which including money, position and reputation.
To most people nowadays, being rich seems to equal success. Since one became rich, one could soon catch the attention of mass media. All of a sudden, different versions of his success stories were infused into the crowd, and then he was on the cover of magazines with people’s admiration and the tag “success”. Since he became success, his words seemed to be wise. He next lectures people how to achieve success in his way, and it is natural that the jangling group are that eager to chase that kind of success.
However, is that the real success? Or success could not be counted unless being rich? I do not agree with that. Martin Luther King was never rich, and what’s worse, he had suffered from his pursuits, even paid his life. But when the African American finally gained their rights of being treated equally, no one would say that he was not successful.
I have also looked up the original meaning of “success” in Oxford Dictionary, and it explains success as “the fact that you have achieved something you want and have been trying to do or get”. As far as I am concerned, success is a personal experience more than the material wealth. Sometimes the so-called success which rich people claimed is
just one aspect of life—material success, not the real success. There are two sides to real success and they are inextricably linked: the material side and the personal side. The key word is balance. We need to pay proper attention to them so that we don’t blindly admire those rich people and lose ourselves.
It is essential for the public to change their attitude toward famous people. Maybe they could focus more on their spiritual level than on their luxury lifestyle, which has been misleading the social value so far away.
